Hey guys,
I was looking into the University of Nevada and noticed that they mainly accept Nevada Residents. I was wondering if anyone who was not a resident was accepted (and possibly what your stats were?) as well as any other information about the school you could offer. I am considering applying there so that I can be closer to my family and live somewhere warm. Any info on the school and my chances as an out of state resident (I am an Alaskan Resident - maybe that would add to their "diversity?") would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the replies.
Hey, hey, hey ... sorry we didn't get back to you fast enough

IMHO, I'd suggest that the lack of replies says something about the answer you seek. It doesn't look like many people from outside of NV is getting in. However! I think you may qualify. I called UNV a while back and asked about applying, and, if my recollection serves me correctly, they accept applications from non NV students who have residency in a state that doesn't have its own medical school.

Give them a call to confirm.

😛 Sorry I am at work and incredibly bored. 😳

Thanks guys. I just emailed the head of admissions. I'll try calling if I don't hear back soon. 🙂

Anyone who is currently going to UNV who can tell me more about the school in general? All I have to go off of is what they have on the website which is pretty good, but I would like some insider info if possible.

As well, does anyone (Encore?) know about living conditions in Nevada? Like expense-wise and availability? I know here in AK housing is REALLY expensive - for apartments or on campus housing. What's the situation like in Nevada? I imagine it is probably fairly expensive being a near tourist trap?

What tncekm and phospho said is true, I go to UNLV and went to the UNSOM preview last week there.

You can apply, but they seem to 'strongly favor' Nevada residents. They mentioned during the seminar that most NV applicants get interviews, but if your gpa/mcat/ecs are fairly competitive for med school then you may also have a pretty decent shot.

This is plucked straight from the booklet they gave me:

"Students from the four western states with no medical school (Alaska, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho) are also eligible for admission."

I will also note that out of the medical students that they had there to speak with us, there was one who came from out of state (one of the four mentioned, but i can't remember which). Also a few who were NV residents but did their UG out of state, maintaining NV residency throughout.

Another interesting req. is you need 6 credits of behavioral science, and 3 of those have to be upper division.

Anyway, hope this helps in your decision. I wish you best of luck : )

I feel your pain with a lack of SDN love for Nevada. There aren't very many of my fellow residents on here. By warm, I'm assuming that you mean Las Vegas. Just so you know, at least the first 2 years at UNSOM are spent in Reno. While warmer than Alaska, it isn't exactly warm here during winter. (We've already gotten some snow this year.) Also, as the above posters said, it really isn't recommended to apply unless you're from NV, one of the western states without med schools, or neighboring CA counties. It looks like you might be in luck as an Alaska resident for one of the 5 OOS slots, though! Good luck!

To Katarina, thanks - that's really good to know about the Behavioral Science classes. I'll have to see what my school offers.
To ImNotBritish I can handle the cold, but I bet it's not as downright frigid there as it is here lmao. I would like some sun in the summers too! The last few summers here have been majorly crappy. 🙁 How's the cost of living down there?

P.S. Anyone know how many people apply to NVU each yr and how many of thos applicants are out of state?

The cost of living is actually not bad in Nevada. Reno is a smaller city than Vegas and rents are probably 700 to 900 for the average 2 bedroom (maybe less if you aren't picky about where you live). The closer you live to downtown, I imagine it would probably be cheaper because proximity to the Strip/downtown Reno = poverty. Sparks, a suburb equivalent to Henderson near Vegas, is probably more expensive -but outrageous.

Reno is easy to navigate and actually has moderate temps compared to Vegas (frequent winter snow and skiing nearby). Away from the tourist areas, it might remind you of a warmer version of AK with more mountains and tumbleweed.

In Nevada, 85% of the land is owned by the government, so the middle of the state is very sparsely populated, with small, small towns and Basque communities (and restaurants!). There is really a cultural disconnect between the two big cities (especially Vegas) and the rest of the state. All of this just provided for background information.

Haha it sounds so perfect! Thanks very much for all of the info! Anyone out there going to UNV right now?

Personally, I think it's the most beautiful state I've ever been to. The only time I get scared is if I have to drive from Reno to Vegas - barely any cell phone service along the way. The scenery definitely distracts though.

That's not much different from a drive from Anch to Fbks, which I have done before on my own. lol I love long drives. 🙂

I know this is an old post, but unfortunately, I could barely find some posts about how an NV resident applies to UNLV.
UNLV will be my TOP 1 choice as I'm an in-state. Hopefully, by the time I am eligible to apply, this school will give me a hand.
