University of New England Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was accepted in the 10/3 interview and I'm 95% sure I'll be there this fall...just waiting on 2 schools in Washington before I decide. Excited to get started this fall :soexcited:

What did you guys like most about UNE? I decided to attend this over other schools cuz I really liked that their Portland campus is for graduate students only, and that there are nice lounge areas/cafeterias around the small campus so I don't have to drive and get a snack or coffee. I like their great graduating and 1st time NPTE pass rate (~95% for each I believe), and the professors and current students seemed nice and down to earth. I also think 60 is a pretty good class size to have. I also wanna experience life outside of California (been here my whole life), and I love outdoor activities and I thought Maine would be a great place to go to school, especially after I visited. I'll be able to experience all the seasons, be around snow during winter, as well as eat good seafood.

Congrats to both of you on getting in. I'm also really excited to be attending UNE! There are a lot of things I like about this school and a lot of them are very similar to what you said @ktachiba . Obviously academics are important and like you said, their pass rates, employment rate after graduation, and stuff like that were all pretty impressive. I went to a big school for undergrad so I'm looking forward to experiencing something new with their small campus in Portland. I also really loved the city itself when I was there for my interview. Lots of different things to do downtown and outside of the city. I had my choice between this school and a school closer to home in Wisconsin and this school just felt right compared to the other.

Congrats to all on your acceptance!
Hi, I'm a current DPT student at UNE, if I can answer any question in regard to the program, school, area..etc please don't hesitate to ask..

To all incoming students: see you in August!

Thanks man! I was wondering what a typical school day was like for an incoming first year? Also, where do most students live?

Hi. A typical day for your first semester : mon, wed, fri; you start at 8am and usually finish anywhere between 12 & 4pm depending on if you have lab that day.
Tue, & thur; are usually spend at the biddford campus (where they do anatomy lecture & anatomy lab) typically they start around 11am and usually end somewhere near 4pm

As far as housing; most students live in portland, and some in the near cities, south portland, Saco, etc.. Some students use online searched to locate rental apartment and others relay on the posted rentals through the university site ( you will get an email in a few month welcoming you and providing you with the link) almost 90% of pt students roommate with 1 or more students. It is all depend on how much you are welling to spend on housing.

Please note that that schedule for your 2nd semester is completely differnt from what I have provided, but as of now you don't need to worry about it!

Any other questions please don't hesitate to ask

Congrats guys!! UNE felt like an all around great fit. I really liked the appeal of a graduate campus. The faculty I met were all very encouraging. Coming around a large city school, I love the idea of being a part of a smaller more personal school. I loved visiting Portland and I can't wait to start PT school.:soexcited:

Thanks man! How close are you to your classmates? Are there opportunities to do things outside of school?

Since it's a fairly small class people will get to know each other fairly quick! I have met some amazing people in the program and made some close friends..
With the beginning of each semester usually things are a little slow and you do have some free time to purse whatever you wish outside school.. In addition weekends usually where must student run errands and what not. It is all depending on your style of studying ; some people tend to quickly absorbe info which leaves them lots of free time, and others not so much..
There are also oppuritintiy to participate in school organization where you can mingle with students from other programs, as well as clubs, and other activities!

Cool, thanks for the info! Also, what do you think would be the biggest adjustment(s) to life in Maine other than the weather (coming from California)?

And is school cancelled when it snows? My biggest concern right now is driving in the snow, esp after seeing all these accidents on CNN cuz of snow lol

When did you think that we will get the welcome e-mail and do you have any other advice on housing?

On a different note, have any of you seen if anyone made a facebook page for our class yet?

I can tell you this: we have a person from our class that came from Cali, and she is not having any issues as far as adjustment to weather.

I will be honest here: the weather in maine is not easy! it can get very cold in the winter, but with the right jacket/hat/gloves/shoes you should not have any issues. as far as snow, I haven't had any "major" issues with road clearing! unlike the things you see on TV, snow in this state is not a new thing, and they are often ready and quick in clearing and salting roads.. so far, the schools has not canceled a single class.. but they will cancel classes if they feel that the weather will pose a hazard to the students. With fairly good tire you should have no issues

I don't know the exact date of when they send the e-mail, but if my memory serves me correctly, it is send sometime in MAY/June!?

Yes, please create a facebook group! it will quickly become an extremely helpful tool to the incoming students where they can share apt rental info, questions, and .....
also the group will be very helpful when are you actually enrolled in school, on our current class group we share a lot of study materials, and remind each others of certain assignments and important dates...

All the best

sounds like a good idea, I'm down for a group

How many hours do you study per day/week? And are there any options for residency after graduation?

Hi! I was accepted after the October 3 interview, and paid the deposit. I just loved it there!

Hey everyone, congrats on getting into UNE! I'm a current first year and thought I would just say hi in case you have any questions, etc. It was really helpful for our class to have current students be available for help with stuff. Also, I haven't checked, but I would make sure your FB page is open to the public for a while (until the class is finalized?) to make sure students who aren't on here can find it.

Hi, as far hours per week studying, I wish I can give you an exact number, but you have to take into consideration the way different student learn, some will read something once and it sticks and the other have to read it multiple times. but as a general rule: in the beginning of a semester, there isn't much to study, so you do have a lot of free time on your hands, but as the semester progress; hours on studying increase. currently, I'm spending anywhere between 4-6 hours of studying per day, but this number greatly change depending on what's going on that weeks.
to answer your residency question: an option to do residency is available to all DPT students at any university.. the residency programs are certified through a branch of the APTA and are available to (I Believe a) licensed PT ( post -school) but I would worry about this for now, you got 3 years of PT school in front of you..

haha yeah that's true I tend to worry about the future too much...I wasn't sure if UNE had a residency program, but thanks for clarifying that...Also, what do you like most about UNE? and least?

Thanks for answering all my questions, its making my decision to go to UNE even easier as the students there all seem really cool and helpful

Hey @MCWills, thanks for the advice on the facebook group and for being available for questions. I currently have the group set to closed and the facebook description says anyone can find the group so hopefully that's actually the case. lol. How have you liked your experience at UNE so far?

Congrats! If you haven't already joined the group on facebook for our class, there's a link a few posts above yours that you can click on so you can join it.

Cool, I hadn't searched for the FB page so I wasn't sure about that. If people can search for it then I'm sure it's good. As for my time at UNE I think it's not just one thing. There are so many really great people here and the surrounding area has so much to offer. Our class is pretty close and there is no competition between people because we are all just trying to get through this together and know that in the "real world" we're all going to have to work together as a team so we might as well start pulling for each other now.

As for studying I think it really depends. I am definitely on the lower end for hours I spend studying, but I have different priorities with a family at home. I try to stay on campus every day until 5pm, then go home and forget about school until after my kid's bedtime when I'll often get in another 1-2 hours of work. The key is to figure out what works best for you, never let yourself get behind, surround yourself with others who can help you get through it all and make you happy, and be very good about time management.

I have an interview on Friday March 6 with UNE. Any advice? Should I be nervous about the writing section?

I believe they change the writing section each time or maybe they will recycle from previous interviews. I interviewed Dec 5th and for the writing section we had to write how we deal with stress. It really wasn't scary. It seems as though they chose topics that are easy to write about. Good luck!!!! 🙂
