Hello,
I am having a tough time with the following question on Univ. Of Toledo's secondary:

The University of Toledo College of Medicine is committed to excellence in education which prepares graduates to deliver
quality health care. Developing cultural competence is an important goal in our curriculum. Cultural competence is defined as an
awareness, understanding and ability to use specific methods to deal effectively with cultural issues and its role in health and health
care. Please discuss a life experience in which you feel you demonstrated cultural competence.

Can anyone help with this? Any ideas to get started? Thanks.

for what its worth, it sounds to me that they are asking if you have had any exposure to another culture. have you ever worked with or been involved in anything that has required you to work with people with a different background? the question leaves it open for a broad interpretation. i lived in another country for two years and that was for sure a cultural experience. have you ever had to work with someone from another country or try and communicate with someone who didn't speak english?

hope that helps.

Honestly, I have been exposed to many cultures but this question was hell for me. Just think of times you've been exposed to a different culture and what you thought about it or how you acted. It is a HARD question unless you've done charity work, inner-city volunteering, translating, etc.

Its hard to help you when I dont know how youve been exposed and because "its a life experience" and I have no clue what you've experienced. For me it was taking a trip with an organization downtown the volunteer that exposed me to inner city undereducated African Americans. I just talked about what I thought and how I felt and a little about how I could personally help the situation.

It's a dumb question but just BS it like explained above. I found it quite disappointing that instead of asking a meaningful question like Why Toledo? or What aspect of medicine do you believe would be most challenging?, they resort to asking how we would respond to the impending sensitivity brainwashing that we will all be subject to throughout our careers.

Don't you have to tie the experience in with health care too. Why did they have to add the health and healthcare part at the end.

I have some cultural experiences, but not really healthcare related.

I don't think it has to be health care related. I wrote about my experience in food service/catering and having to be aware of dietary restrictions and tastes of different cultures in order to serve my clients with menus that fit their needs.
