I did a forum search and was surprised that there were so few threads on the Toledo MSBS program given the fact that they've been around for so long. Anyone else planning on applying or attending this program right now?

I applied here in March, but I am of the understanding that they will not give any acceptances or rejections until June...?

Maybe its cuz they favor OH residents only from what I've heard. Other programs take a lot of OOSers and a lot of people applying to SMPs are from other parts like Fl., california, the northeast, etc.

I did notice that their tuition rate was much lower for in-staters than for out of state students. Maybe that's why not a lot of people are applying to this program.

How many are there besides this one and UCincy? Those are the only 2 I've heard of. I know someone who did this program and is now in medical school.

Well, there are actually 3 if you include the Ohio State Medpath program. The problem is that the OSU Medpath program is geared more towards URMs and disadvantaged minorities than towards college graduates and glide year students. Also, in order to be eligible for the Medpath program, you had to have applied to the OSU college of Medicine first and the admissions committee had to have picked you for an interview. This might not be possible if you took the MCAT late or if you didn't find out about the program until March.

I am assuming you are talking about the MSBS/MS program? I am currently in it right now. If you have any questions let me know!

Thanks lance! How's the program treating you? How's Toledo?

When did you hear back from their admissions office after you submitted your application

Does anybody know when acceptances will be given out?

Probably won't be hearing back from them until the 2nd week or the middle of June.

I also applied to this program back when they started accepting applications. They told me that they don't even look at any applicant information until June 1st. Looking through old threads, it looks like some people heard as early as a week after the 1st, but others didn't hear until the beginning of July. Here's hoping we all get early acceptances and don't have to wait!

They seem to be taking their sweet time. I wonder if we'll hear back next week.

Yay me too...just received an email. Any thoughts about the program? So far im lovin the 65% acceptance rate to toledo med....but so far i'm also sitting on an acceptance from hopkins MHS but they have no linkages. Which prgm do u guys think is better? I mean Hopkins def has the name.

Thanks GujuDoc but I was just wondering if doing an SMP is looked upon positively by schools besides the school im doing the smp in. For example if i do the toledo program, would another school say Creighton Med look favorably upon the fact that Im taking med school courses at Toledo?

Reason Im wondering about this is that some schools might actually prefer they teach you this knowledge first hand rather than some other med school. Any thoughts???

just a lag year...although my mcat is mediocre--29--my gpa is solid although from a state school.

In that case do whichever program you think will suit your needs. It seems like you don't need the program. And if that's the case do the Hopkins program. I thought you were someone who needed an SMP to get into med school. In that case I'd actually advise against doing an SMP because of the risk associated with if you do horrible in one.

I'm not so sure, I think different programs cater to different needs and although on the surface, this person doesn't seem to need an SMP, that 29 on his MCAT can seriously hurt his application. The average MCAT score of accepted applicants nowadays is 32 so his MCAT may be "borderline" for a medical school in his part of the country. I think this person needs all the help he can get, and if doing an SMP will guarantee an interview and secure a spot in Toledo's upcoming class, more power to him. The Hopkins MHS doesn't seem to have any linkage and it's way more expensive - so I'm not sure it's more useful than the Toledo SMP.

Speaking of which, I think the Toledo program caters more to people who have decent GPAs but low MCATs (as evidenced by the fact that the average of their class is a 3.5 GPA and a 27 MCAT). Whereas the Cincinnati program caters to people who have low GPAs but high MCATs (since it seems that most people who got accepted to Cinci have 3.2, 3.3s but 32+ MCAT scores). So if this person doesn't want to retake the MCATs or has retaken it without improvement, I think it may be better for him to do the Toledo SMP since it gives him a better shot at going to Toledo next year.

Congrats!

They are doing acceptances by snail mail, right?

Hey,

No, actually I got an email about it. But it said that I would be getting letter in the mail about it as well with an official letter and letters of intent to fill out, etc. I got my app in way early though (like mid January) so they're probably sending them out as they get through them.

Thanks for the info. I haven't heard anything yet... I'm hoping maybe later today. I got my application in the first week of March, so we'll see.

Does anyone know if they give out rejections or waitlist notifications along the way, or if they wait until they get through everyone for that?

Finally heard back from these guys - I'm in. Submitted my application around May. Now I have to decide between Toledo MSBS and Cincinnati's SMP.

I just heard back too, and got in! Now I need to figure out money issues since I'm out of state, then I'll make a decision.

Good luck to everyone else!

I'm in too...very excited. Do you guys have any idea where you will look to live?

Starting August 1st, I am going to be leasing a two bedroom apartment in Linda and Susan Arms Apartment, which is within walkable distance (.5 miles) from the health sciences campus. This apartment received very high ratings from previous medical school students in terms of safety, quietness, and management. Most of the people living here are professionals/graduate students as well. You will be getting the master bedroom for a pretty nominal price of $265+utilities(shared). The apartment is on the top floor so you don't have to worry about loud neighbors and it will save a lot on heating during winter. You can get a virtual tour of the apartment and see the floor plans on forrent.com. You can email me at shirkshark (at) gmail.com if ur interested.

"congratz to everyone who is accepted and considering to come to the UC-SMP. I am a student here right now...from my point of view, the faculty and staff here at UC are EXTREMELY helpful with regards to helping you do well (whether its review sessions, tutoring, answering questions). With that in mind, its up to each individual student to step up and make it easier for the faculty to write a good recommendation for you (i.e., basically they want you to be accepted into medical school, but theres only such much they can do on their end). However, if you do well in this program you will get a solid letter of recommendation.
They also set you up with shadowing opportunity coordinator and lag year opportunities (for anyone waiting til the end of the program to apply to med school, like myself). The professors for the most part are very good and because of the size of the class its a pretty tight knit group."

Found it in another thread. Thought it might be pertinent.

Hey,

Since enough of us got accepted at this point I think we should start a facebook group. I would do it but right now im debating between Cincy and Toledo. Being the creator of a group might be ackward if I am not a part of it (especially since I am starting to think the Cincy program makes a lot more sense). But I would appreciate it if one of u guys who are definately going to the program could pick up the tab on this one.

Aite cya around...may be.

Hey,
I will be attending the MSBS program at Toledo in the fall and am looking for a female roommate. Please email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

I have officially decided to attend the program, but now I have a question. I am out of state, and am wondering if there are any other Ohio med schools I should apply to besides Toledo? I'm not familiar with most of the Ohio schools, so I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice.

Thanks!

Lebaca,
You probably have the best shot at Toledo because you are in the program, but also definitely apply to Wright State University, NEOUCOM, University of Cincinnati, and possibly even Ohio State and Case Western Reserve University.

Thanks for the input! I'll definitely look into those schools.

hey everyone

im also going to be attending this program and i was wondering if anyone has received mail regarding a book list? also, for those of you who have applied to medical schools that require a LOR from an advisor in the graduate program, have you already requested one from Dr. Bennett-Clarke or are you waiting till orientation/start of classes?

thanks!

I've been a long time lazy lurker but I figured I finally make an sdn sn for myself. I'm going to the Toledo SMP this fall, pretty stoked about it, and just wanted to get an idea if all of you have submitted your AMCAS already, since the first third of August is already done for and I've been debating on whether or not I should apply, and how the SMP will show on the AMCAS app. If I did apply, this would be Round 4 for me, with 2 disappointing Waitlist notches on the belt. My pre-med advisor, who loves to play it oversafe, told me I should wait till the end of the program to apply, but it just seems like so many people apply concurrently, and with the strong linkage rate of this program, I think we might be encouraged to apply that same year. I figure if I apply to one (Toledo first and foremost), then I'll add a few more, a hit on the wallet, but it's a gamble well worth it. Let me know what you all think, any advice is well appreciated...
