So what's the deal with UNLV's laptop? They say it'll cost me $2500, is that for real? I imagine they're going through Dell, or a similar source. Ugh, it makes me sick to think they're going to force me to do stupid things like pay Dell $200 to get $20 of RAM, or $400 for an extra 200 Mhz of processor speed. :bang: Is it just a recommended value, and can we set the parameters of a base model ourselves so that we can upgrade as we see fit?

I think they're strict about requiring 'watevr' laptop cuz they want everyone to be on "the same page" sort off.. like w/ the same programs etc.

But a good idea would be to talk to the it team @ ur school, and tell them to configure ur personal laptop of choice w/ the schools e-curriculum or watever programs they want every student to have..

It is not as you say. They said they don't care what you do about your old laptop, but you have to buy the school one. I'd like to hear details from a UNLV student.

We have to pay 2200 for a lenovo tablet pc at ASDOH. The only reason I have to justify that expense is that all 4 years of my textbooks are on the computer. I'm guessing that is the same situation at UNLV which is probably why your laptop is so expensive.

Does the price include service? My class all got 1 of 2 Dell models, but it included premium service over the 4 years. They'll replace any part that fails by overnighting the replacement to you and sending a repair technician to meet you and fix it for you. Over the four years, I had nearly everything replaced except the memory & CPU: screen, case, keyboard, main board, battery, and hard drives twice. If they can't fix it, you may get a full replacement of the whole laptop. If you will be lugging your laptop to school for taking notes in class and and accessing clinical records, it'll take a beating and the repair service will be worth it.

Ya-
So I'm a student at UNLV and the laptop thing really isn't too bad. I think they are a bit cheaper too... like 1500$. You can add on the extras if you want but it includes full service for the 4 years and replacement of everything, except your screen and batteries. There was a rumor going around that they would be allowing people to furnish their own laptops and the school could add on some of the neccesary secutity functions.

Hope that helps
