I'm not doing my residency at NYU but I found the responses in this thread a little offensive.

Don't trash talk pedo (or any) program please.

I have some friends in the program and they're very happy to be there.

It's not trash talking. Of the applicants that NYU ranked, everyone ranked other programs higher and was accepted somewhere else, except for five people. And there may have been some that would gladly go there but were not ranked by the program. (My sympathy goes out to you).

Those are just the facts. Things seem to be different every year with the match. Especially (in my personal experience) at least half of directors don't fully understand the process. Now, I have no idea what happened at NYU, and know nothing about the program. But every year, some programs don't rank enough people and this is the result. One year, they may only need to rank 10 people to get 10, but other years perhaps 20 or 30 need to be ranked.

Please note: I am only making gross generalizations and know nothing of what actually happened in any of the unmatched situations.

Thanks for the response dental man. I think people understand how some programs go unfilled due to the nature of Match.

I just think it's a little rude of a 3rd year dental student to question someone's desire to go to NYU for Pedo.

They have 10 spots. With their tuition being what it is, I'm surprised 5 people wanted to go there

I proudly ranked NYU in my top 3 and was excited to match there. Yes, it's expensive but it's a great program and the residents are really fantastic. I was REALLY sold during the interview. I would honestly rather pay the tuition and be happy where I am with supportive faculty and fun co-residents.

Considering the number of people scrambling for a spot there, it would be wise not to offend anyone else. Who knows, you or someone you know might find yourselves in that position next year.
