I've heard bad stuff about the Arkansas PD, but nothing about LSU-Shreveport's issues.. What's going on there?

is it true that Umass didn't fill any of it's spots for the match?

I was told by an attending that they are on probation, which they are according to the ACGME site and that by not matching any slots this year, it will most likely close.

I helped a buddy of mine secure a prelim and advanced spot and I can tell you I wish scrambling on no medical student. The process is helter skelter. fax lines busy, secretaries screaming at you, and of course feeling like crap because you didn't match.

My sympathies to those that haven't secured a spot yet.

They were pretty much recommended to close (not told to close), but the program decided to not take that recommendation. Now, they are up for review in April for closure. I was told that the chances of closure were ~40-70% depending on the attitude of the board. Morale is obviously low, but the administration is doing their best to stay open and make the necessary changes. However, if one matched there, they might later find out that their newly matched program closed, and they didn't even get a chance to scramble. LSU-Shreveport did state that they would honor the first year...but of course you would be on your own CA1 to CA3.

Since I matched, I don't have access to which programs had spots open. But I am still interested in knowing.

I understand that there were 10 spots left open after the match (categorical).

And I believe Yale had 2 spots open.

Anyone know what other programs didn't fill?

West Virginia had one categorical spot open, filled within an hour. Funny we filled while on probation the last two cycles, but had an open spot now that we are off probation and accredited again. 🙄 It's such a game.

I interviewed there, and needless to say, I was less than flattered... I could certainly see why ALOT of people would be turned off by the program. But thats just me.

Anyone have access to last years unmatched list? Would love to see a comparison.

I found this information in a thread from last year:

Do any american grads apply to the puerto rico program?

In Puerto rico some programs require that you speak fluent spanish.

thanks a lot this will definitely help next year.

Now that some of the euphoria and hangovers from match day have subsided, I wanted to know if there are any updates on currently unfilled PGY-2 (CA-1) positions. I am board certified in family medicine and have been in practice for almost 3 years and am looking to find a PGY-2 position outside the match.

It looks like Yale, MC of Wisconsin, UConn, UMass and a few others initially had some PGY-2 spots available. Are there any firsthand updates on those spots? I assume that most, if not all, of the open PGY-1 spots were quickly filled by scrambling 4th year med students. . .but if you happen to be at a program that did not fill (Arkansas, Texas Tech) and they still have spots open, I'd be interested to hear about that. Some of these programs may take an upper level applicant just to round out their numbers and fill up.

Finally, lots of programs hold spots every year for residents who may be transferring from another specialty, or old timers like me who are wanting to come back - if your school has one of those spots open for July 2009, I'd love to know about it.

Congratulations to all who have matched -

CMD

I believe that MCW had 2 advanced spots unfilled this year. I think that at least one of these spots has been filled already. However, MCW also has about 2-3 spots outside the match each year that they reserve for people such as yourself, switching fields, etc. I would give Dr. Ebert (the PD) a call or email if you are interested.
