Now that all is said and done, I would love to know which programs had unmatched spots and how many spots were available for each program. It might prove valuable for current MSI,II,&III to help evaluate programs and wonder why did not fill.

Wow, very interesting...shocked some programs seem to have filled that i didn't think would and some programs didn't fill that i thought surely would. Schwartz, anyway you could repost your thread and put a space between programs like the other person did? Anyone know how many spots available at each institution? Hope curiousity didn't really kill the cat 😉 Anyone going to St. louis for psych?

that list is outdated. only 3 progs left.

Some of those are PGY2 spots.

If a program went unfilled, would that necessarily mean it wasn't a good program with respect to teaching, etc? I'm just a second year, but, looking ahead, I was planning to apply to one of the programs that didn't fill a single spot according to the list posted.

There can be many reasons a program does not fill.it does not means its poor, many good programs dont match a spot or two even in highly competitive specialties..
If you have particular place in mind.. you have plenty of time to check it out first hand, speak to its residents and find out what the situation really is.

Alwaysjammin, you can tell how many spots were unfilled by the numbers next to the name of the school. On the first list, it shows the quota and then the number filled. On the second list posted, it shows quota, filled, unfilled.
I'm guessing that that is the initial list (from before the actual start of the scramble), but I'm not sure.
Futuredo32, the list can occassionally be misleading. For example, UTSW shows a quota of 2 spots both of which went unfilled. I am pretty sure that that is the research track. They have 12 total PGY1 spots. My guess is that they just filled all 12 through their regular track.
Also, I think UC Davis, which did not fill, is an excellent program, especially from a teaching standpoint. I suspect that many of their interviewees opt for other California programs, with location oftentimes being a significant factor.

thanks, that's what i thought but not 100% sure.

definately take unmatched spots as not the best indicator of a good program vs. a bad program. that being said, if a program doesn't match a couple of spots in a decent location/reputable school, especially given the demand for psychiatry, you may want to really critique the school more as there COULD be something wrong. the best resource are 4th year residents (non-chiefs) who have no real incentive to bend the truth to get candidates to their school.

Any take on why Indiana Univ remained unfilled this time? Did they fill up later in the scramble?

Just wondering....

Indiana did fill in the scramble.

Like some of the other Midwest programs, Indiana had a couple of open spots after the match. It seems that less desirable places to relocate to (ie. Midwest, Southeast) tend to recruit less outside interest than out West or the Northeast. They depend more heavily on local student interest. In general, there always seems to be some openings every year in very solid Midwest programs (including Michigan, Mayo, and Indiana this year; and U of Michigan, U of Wisconsin, and Med Coll of Wisc a couple of years ago). This is the first time in many years Indiana has had any openings after the match. However, the program has not really undergone any significant changes or loss of faculty. I think it is just one of those trends in the Midwest. Next year, it'll probably be a handful of different Midwest programs.

Nope those are PGY2 spots. When I was making my rank list, there were two program codes for UTSW, 2835400A0 which had two PGY2 spots, and 2835400C0 for the 12 PGY1 spots, which all filled. Most programs don't have a separate program code for the research track. Stanford does though.

Anyway I don't know how to tell which are PGY2 spots. I just know that those UTSW spots are because I noticed the two codes when making my ROL. So yeah, that list is misleading. I wonder why they don't designate PGY1 or PGY2 like they do when you're entering your ROL on the NRMP website. There must be a way to look up the NRMP program codes...

I know that Davis filled...they only have 8 positions even though it is listed to have 9. Not sure why this is....
