How about some info?

Are you AMG or IMG?
Are you M or F?
Step 1 score?
Step 2 CK score?
Clinical grades?
AoA?
Where did you apply?
What was your biggest weakness on your application?
etc. etc.

AMG M 210 217 no honors no AoA
biggest weakness is that I had to repeat the second year curriculum

did you apply broadly? i know 2 people at my own med school who failed their first year and still matched in Ob. maybe apply more broadly?

there were about 6 unfilled spots in the scramble, believe there is still one left. did you try to apply during the scramble?

i would think spots would open up, alot of people drop out of ob. if not, there is always FP, which has OB components.

I heard there are many red flags on applications - failing a year of medical school, failing a step on the first time, discipline actions by the school, being an IMG, etc. Having one of these red flags virtually excludes you from being ranked on some programs. It is dependent on the program director.

You should seriously consider speaking to your mentor/advisor at your school.

Word of mouth from other students. Speaking with residency directors and advisors.

Having been on the other side in ranking meetings, this is certainly true...all except the IMG part...we will consider IMG's (though this is program dependent). Sometimes we will consider applicants who failed a step...but there better be a good explaination, that better be the only blemish of the record, and the rebound score better be over 210.

OB's competitiveness goes up and down in waves, and for the past few years has been super-competitive. Right now your application package seems pretty good, although I'm not sure what impact repeating a year played into the decision making process.

I was in your shoes 2 years ago, again, 6 open spots and 4 were at the same program, 2 were UCLA pre-lim spots. The key here is to decide if OB is really what you want. I was able to interview with Family Medicine at my school after the match, but could not bring myself to do that specialty, while other classmates who did not match for OB at my school did accept the Family Medicine offer.

The other option is to do a pre-lim in either OB or medicine. Some of the OB pre-lim programs do not fill until later, you just have to call each one. With medicine pre-lim, let them know that you are going to keep looking for OB programs, but set a date with them that you will stop looking after that, so they can count on you for the year. OB programs lose interns, as the Step scores come in and people fail, or family obligations make it so they cannot do the position. So look at Creog clearinghouse as much as possible, and have your letters of rec and your ERAS application with you at all times to fax.

The worst case scenario would be to do a year of medicine and re-apply during the match next year, and most programs would look favorably on a year spent well with medicine, shows you can handle intern year, and it will be a benefit for the GYN and gyn onc patients.

Good luck!

Are DOs considered similar to IMGs?

Are DOs considered similar to IMGs?

It depends on the program. A lot of programs accept DOs, especially if they take the USMLE exams in addition to the COMLEX. Some programs would prefer an IMG to a DO. The only real way to tell is to look at each program's resident roster on their website. If you see any DOs listed, no worries. If not, you should probably contact the PC before applying.

One other thing to consider: if you take a year in another specialty such as FM, IM, or Gen Surg, six months can be applied to your PGY 1 year in OBG (at the discretion of the Program Director with permission from the Institution's DIO and the ACGME). In that scenario, you could potentially transfer into a PGY 2 position next year rather than reapplying for Internship, although you would have to stay an additional six months after your class graduates and delay taking your written board exam.

I would recommend that if OB/GYN is really what you want to do either get a prelim OB spot although it might be a bit too late for this as there were only six spots open in the scramble.

A prelim year in any specialty would help if you manage to secure good letters and I would recommend a prelim year in surgery.

is the pre-lim OB year the same as an "internship" year. Say if i were on the AOA opportunities website to search for programs, is that under the internship search rather than residency search?

to the OP-what did you end up training in for this past year?

my coordinator suggested i apply to FP programs in case i don't match ob (IMG, 79/88) because she said it was better to apply from a different program than it would be to work for a year and apply from "outside medicine"

any pros cons to your decision?
thx!

What exactly is AOA? I'm only a hs student and a web search gave a variety of answers.
