Hello all, I am currently trying to finish off my prereqs to apply and I'm having trouble deciding what other unrequired courses i should take. Any suggestions? I've been told either genetics, cell bio, anatomy and physiology, mamm phys, micro, histology, etc. But, which ones! who has time to take all of them. I only have slots for two or three. Which ones would be most beneficial for d school and the application and the DAT??? i hope genetics is one of them because I registered for it this semseter... =X

Hope to hear from some of you soon! i really need some advice, our final add/drop date is on monday!!!! =(

Whatever you do, take histology.

I've talked to dental students at a few different schools and from what they say Anatomy and Physiology are a huge help if you can fit them in.

Do cell bio or micro if you are done with prerequisites. If you are not ,choose some classes that don't require the prereqs.:luck:

Anatomy will help. Immunology and physiology too. If you can go find the first yr schedule for your school of interest online and pick out the ones you don't have.

I think ( after looking at different schools requirements and recommendations) take biochemistry , microbiology , cell bio.

arent they all required? (except histology)

biochem is definitely a good one for preparation... although it has now become a requirement at most schools I believe. I also hear that an anatomy course will be helpful... which is what I am taking right now. 😀

This again depends on the school. I am guessing predentn must have a really hard histo class. I find that histo is pretty manageable. For me, gross anatomy is a mega b*tch! We do trunk, head & neck and neuro. To top it off the professors are sadists and like to see the students squirm (for instance, we just had a trunk exam, and there were a little over 700 terms, no word bank, and if thats not bad, the lecture exam was harder than lab!). I also hear that pathology is one of the worst.

My recomendations:

Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology (if offered), and Micro
(anatomic sciences, biochemistry-physiology, microbiology-pathology, and dental anatomy and occlusion are all on the NDBE I if this info helps you decide)

Those of us on our 3rd round of applications have had the time to take them all...well, almost all 🙂

i took a plant biology course just because in into plants and I ended up learning more about biology in general than I have in all of the required courses. I got lucky and im sure different courses taught at different school by different professors could offer a similar experience.

IMO, choose these classes based on what you are weak in...the OP hasn't taken the DAT yet so some of these classes can help, and some are useless.
Physiology maybe (Personally weak in this one)...
biochem, cell bio, etc

anatomy isn't on the DAT

1. Biochemistry
2. Anatomy

Take biochem because chemistry is not a fun subject to have to learn while you are taking a bunch of other classes... this will make your life easier.

Take anatomy because gross anatomy SUCKS and requires a ton of memorization.. so if you can take anatomy before hand then you will be able to retain more during gross anatomy.
