If during their fourth year a med student did not feel they would get the residency match they wanted what would they do for a year while they reapplied to increase their chance of matching to the specialty they wanted?

Its generally better for such an individual to at least complete a basic prelim year directly after med school and then in the following year do research in the specialty that interests them.In this way they can get to know people ,make connections and improve their credentials. It does depend on the specific specialty.

Rotating internship or transitional year.

You can also find a research project to immerse yourself in.
