So I have been shadowing a doctor over several occasions at the hospital I work in. I am wanting to use him as an LOR but I'm unsure do to the circumstance. He completed a residency in internal medicine, but immediately changed paths into radiology. He is currently in his second year as a radiology resident. Because he completed his first residency, he does moonlight shift in the emergency department, and this is when I do my shadowing.

I read at one time it is not a good idea to get an LOR from a resident. With this situation, would it fall under the same case?

I've tried searching but couldn't come up with anything. thanks for any input.

Doesn't sound like you actually know him well or that the letter will be anything besides "he is nice during shadowing rounds and is a cool bro."

Adds nothing to your app, just like most other shadowing letters because they barely know you as a person. Useless. No one cares what department he works in or how many times he's transferred. He doesn't know you. That's the deal breaker for an LOR request.

I agree with inycepoo and would like to add that you don't have to have a physician letter, so don't bend over backwards to find one if it won't be stellar. I have no idea how many people do have a physician letter, but I am not one of them. The exception, of course, is if you need a DO letter.

Actually he knows me pretty well, not sure how that was assumed? We work together also so he has seen my work ethic. I know he will write me a strong letter so that why I'd like to ask him.

So none of that really answers my question...

The answer is it doesn't matter as long as he knows you well. It was implied in our replies.

How about a middle-of-the-road response? Get the letter from him, but make sure it isn't one in your top 3.
