Does anybody hear have any experience with the early admission program at UNTHSC-TCOM? My primary question is as follows. If you are not accepted with the EDP do you the fall into the general application pool or is that rejection final for that year. I have contacted the admissions office at TCOM on several occasions and the responses I've recieved so far have been ambiguous at best. Anyway any info you have would be appreciated.

Sorry, I mis-spoke. I am refering to the early DECISION program. TCOM does not have an early admission program.

If you are not selected, you are placed in the regular applicant pool. To be selected via the EDP, there needs to be something special about you. This does not necessarily mean a sky-high GPA and MCAT. However, anything less than their average will hurt you. You need to be very well rounded, have an excellent essay, letters of recommendation, yadda, yadda, yadda, etc..

The bad thing about it is you are not allowed to submit any other applications until around 1 Oct (if I remember correctly) this would put you behind the power curve at other schools.

I seriously considered doing this, but chickened out...Good thing I did, even though I loved TCOM and was accepted I decided to go to a school closer to home.

That's strange. I was told by the med student admissions office that if your application is rejected for EDP, that's it. You are banished to the rejection pool. For this reason, I avoided EDP, but mathced nonetheless.

Would it help out an applicant who is only applying to TCOM, but knows that they most likely don't have a chance applying EDP, to go ahead and apply EDP to help out their application in the general applicant pool?

Yeah, I know this thread is 8 years old. I was just wondering if somebody could answer my previous question.

Just happened to see this 21 days after the fact...

I had applied through the EDP but didn't get accepted through it (there were 21 EDP applicants that year, and only 1 got accepted through it). I was put in the regular applicant pool, but still got accepted through the pre-match that November. I think it helped me a little, particularly since TCOM is where I definitely wanted to go:

- It forced me to get my application in EARLY (I submitted it the first day TMDSAS allowed you to submit)
- It got me an early interview (I interviewed August 10th or so)
- I figure that it shows them that you REALLY want to go there and you're not just someone applying to TCOM as backup in case you don't get accepted somewhere else (why not accept someone who's committed over someone who's trying to use them as backup?)

Getting your stuff in to them early is big. Particularly that year, since I had heard that most Texas schools (including TCOM) over-extended themselves a little in giving out pre-match offers that November, thus leaving relatively fewer spots for the match in February (and thus fewer spots for those who applied/interviewed late). They may have streamlined the pre-match situation more in the subsequent years, but you still can't go wrong by getting your application in as early as you possibly can.

Good luck!
