  1. Pre-Medical
Hi Everyone! First time posting on this site. But i'm in an unusual situation. I was formerly enrolled at FSU (2014) and in the middle of my pre-med pre requisite sequence. I had to take a couple years away from classes due to family/personal reasons, but now i'm at a point where I want to put my best foot forward and get into medical school. The thing is, i'm now at a different school and the last class that I finished at FSU was Orgo 1. I did well and finished with an A. However, it has definitely been enough time that I forgot most of the information and consequently apprehensive about signing up for orgo 2, especially considering that I would be taking it at a different school. So, would it be a bad idea to retake Orgo 1 at the risk of getting a lower grade than I did the first time around? Maybe that's just me being overly cautious, but I feel like that could raise some eyebrows. I'm currently signed up to take Orgo 2 but I could switch it at any point this upcoming week. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I would recommend against retaking Orgo 1, BUT, you definitely need to refresh yourself on Orgo in general. How much time do you have before the class starts? If you have the time, go watch Khan Academy videos, and make sure you remember the basics of organic chemistry (resonance, acid/base, geometry) and the basis of mechanisms. Check out "Organic Chemistry as a 2nd language 1st semester", which can help further if Khan isn't doing the job. You don't want to risk retaking Orgo 1 and doing bad because of a tough professor, or whatnot.

Seems like it would be unlikely that you would get a lower grade in Orgo 1, since the material would be refresher. That said, I would think you would be able to just review with Khan Academy and be okay in orgo 2. Also, if you're not taking a super hard schedule, then you'll be able to put in extra time for orgo 2.

That's just it. It was really looking like I was gonna have to take more time off, sent in my application just in case. And just VERY recently signed up for classes (like a couple days ago). If I would have known earlier I was gonna be back I would have done a lot of self-studying, but at this point classes start Monday. Not really a lot of time unless I learn the VERY basics, which I'm not sure is good enough, but hey if that's enough, I'll go through with it. Also, i'm taking physics (with lab) and statistics so my schedule isn't outrageous imo

I had a 3 yr gap between orgo 1 and orgo 2. I also had to take 3 yrs off due to family reasons. I was super nervous about having such a big gap between classes because I only vaguely remembered orgo 1. However, I was able to re-teach myself orgo 1 during orgo 2... I used chemistryprep.com, Kahn academy, and organic chemistry as a second language. They were all great resources. Thankfully I made a high A in the class.
Anyhow, I say all that to say that it is possible to do well after a long gap. It just takes a bit more effort.

Good luck!!
