I'm currently accepted by Midwestern and have already paid the deposit. I love the campus and the people there seem very friendly. On top of that, my family has a house in Glendale, AZ less than 3 miles away from the school. Therefore, I won't have to pay for housing. Recently, I also received my interview invite from UOP. Initially, UOP was one of my top choices for pharmacy schools (along with Midwestern) so now, I'm perplexed as to whether or not I should still go to the interview. UOP and Midwestern are both 3 year schools but UOP is ranked higher. Also, I do like the fact that UOP has rotations in California. I am not ridiculously insistent on staying in California but it would be something nice. The tuition at UOP is also a bit more expensive. 🙁 I've been losing a lot of sleep thinking this over so please...someone give me their advice!

Perhaps you should make a rough cost difference estimate, including the housing consideration. Think about whether the difference between UOP & MWU is worth the difference in cost.

Also, I'd keep the interview with UOP if you can - that way, you know whether you gotta make the decision anyway. You might hate the school when you get there. Hey, c'mon, it could happen. 😉

If you search this forum, you;ll find a post about UOP and their "system" in failing students. During one year, they failed over 20 students in just 1 freaking semester! That was over 10% of their class. I've talked to past and present students and this is still going on however not as drastic. I've heard statistics of anywhere from 10-20% of their students failing out over the course of 6 semesters. So that's 20-40 or more students!

In addition, would you rather be in Glendale, AZ or Stockton, CA? Stockton is known to be the MOST miserable city in the nation! Sure, Glendale is HOT but it is miles better than Stockton. All in all, it doesn't matter where you attend. Just as long as you study hard and graduate on time. If you choose UOP (assuming you get accepted), don't tell us that you haven't been warned!

I've heard of the ridiculous failing rate as well but I always thought of it as a myth. I think I'm leaning more and more towards Midwestern.

Any current UOP students wanna help me out here with the decision? 🙂

I believe delano2000 is going to UOP right now. I wonder if he could give you some insight.

There are also some current / alumni MWU'ers on the boards, but I can't think of names off the bat.

I know UOP does fail students, but I think that's a good thing. A lot of the students I saw who had failed were the slackers who either thought that they could cram an entire semester's worth of work into 2 days of studying or those who genuinely weren't smart enough to be in pharmacy school. It sucks for those who do fail, but they didn't meet the academic goals set up and were held back accordingly.

Oh and one guy got caught cheating on his exams. He rightfully failed.

UoP's retention rate is a lot better than most schools. It was one yr that a lot of people failed and that was due to a huge change in the curriculum. This was for the class of 2012. Only about 6 people from the class before me failed (which is pretty common).

Stockton is bad at times but it depends on where you go. I moved to Stockton from a pretty big city in Texas and thought i would hate every minute of it, but it's really not so bad. There are things to do here, plus you have a lot of places you can visit within a 2hr travel span. Choice is yours OP. The only thing I will say is that if you don't have good time management skills, you might have a problem (i think that goes for all professional schools but it's a little bit harder with accelerated programs).

True story: Go to whichever one will cost you less. Free housing at midwestern seems like a deal too good to pass up.

MWU-CPG is a great school to attend. The teachers care very much about teaching, and have an "open door" policy to discuss anything learned in class. Tuition is a little expensive these days, but in comparison to UOP it is a much better deal. Plus, teachers aren't trying to fail students out of school. Glendale is a great place to live, and the social scene is Scottsdale and Arizona State University is cool. Make the best decision for you.

blue, do you find that having gone to MWU has limited your career (or residency) options? I'm assuming since you have a positive outlook on it still, you haven't run into any issues.

Go to Midwestern. Both programs are expensive, but you won't have to pay rent in AZ and Stockton is a hole. I've visited CPG in the past, and it's a very nice campus. Also, AZ state nearby, so there'll be plenty to do while you're in school.

What day did you interview??? I was in an interview group with a girl that also wanted to go to UOP.... I interviewed on the 29th...

You really think professors want to fail people? I know for a fact that it's not true at UOP. When some people are so off the bell curve that you can't justify passing them, that's why those people failed. It wasn't from missing 1 point on an exam or a percentage point on their overall grade. It was a statistically significant amount. Pharmacy school's shouldn't just pass people because they paid tuition. At least you can respect that there is a line in the sand for passing and failing and they will stand by it.

If you do get into both schools, I would base it on where you want to work. Especially with the overload of new grads expected in the near future with the new school in Sac and the new schools opening up, competition will be stiff. You'll need the contacts in CA that you make through the school and especially during rotations or an intern job you got to land a job. That's a fact.

I tried to clear up the misconception regarding that yr quite a few ppl failed, but of course ppl are still set in their ways of thinking.🙄

Anyways OP, go to the school that you want to go to. I don't know much about Glendale but as far as city goes, I'm pretty sure it's better than Stockton. The only thing I can say is that I love my school and have made a lot of connections already due to the very strong alum power that our school has.

6th semester 06 we lost 20 people at UOP. Half of them because they failed classes and the other half because they did not meet gpa for rotations.

I was in the same situation as you. Ended up going UOP since I figured I was going to stay in California.

If you want to stay in nor cal, I would go to UOP. The IPPE, APPE and rotation experience will leverage your connections in the area.

If you are not planning in staying in Nor Cal. Go to Midwestern.

Only exception I would consider is if you want to do research in the future. I would look at the profs at each university who you would want to be mentored from.

I've been commenting all along and did not realize that this was in the wrong forum...moved to the appropriate forum.

Thanks for everyone's replies. I have decided to go to the interview at UOP so that I may get to know the school a little better and just explore my other options. I definitely don't want to harbor regrets about such a major decision!

Just explore your options for now. You don't have to make such a decision right this very minute.

Thanks a lot for your replies by the way. 🙂 You're one of the most helpful pharmacy students I've encountered on this site!
