UoP vs OHSU

I have been accepted at UoP and OHSU and am trying to decide which school to go to. I am a resident in Oregon. I know the differences between the prices of the school and there is the difference with 3/4years but does anyone have friends who either go to the schools or have more personal experience that may be helpful in making the decision? I've worked with several OHSU grads and they are incredibly competent clinically. If money is no issue, then I could see going to UoP for their strong clinical training and expedited program. However, tuition was a large factor in my decision to choose OHSU over other schools. They start you in clinic very early in comparison to other schools, there is a large patient base in portland, and the clinic and sim labs will be brand new in our 2nd year. UoP will be moving to a new building in the same year, so no matter what school you choose there will be a transition into a new building.

Plus, if you want to practice in Oregon ultimately, 70% of dentists in Oregon are OHSU grads. Existing dentists in Oregon seem to be more likely to sell their practice to or bring on an associate from OHSU.

Ultimately, if money is no issue, go with your gut. Either option will prepare you to be a fantastic clinical dentist.

^Extremely well put. UOP is great but for OHSU, the lower cost and the strong positioning for a dental career in Oregon are some important factors to consider.

Congratulations on your acceptance at both UoP and OHSU! These are both known to be great schools. From an educational perspective, I believe you will obtain a high-quality education regardless of which school you select. However, from a financial perspective, I would encourage you to attend OHSU. The savings of attending a state school instead of a private school more than makes up for finishing 1 year later at OHSU compared to UoP. UoP is also very intensive and leaves you with little time for extracurricular activities which are essential if you decide you want to specialize after. My personal recommendation would be to attend OHSU. Best of luck to you!

UOP: make money a year early
OHSU: more stuff to do with an extra year

I dental assisted an OHSU grad in Houston, tx and he had nothing but goods things to say about OHSU. He felt very competent for private practice after graduation.

in the end you can only go to 1 dental school, both are clinically good and reputable. I dunno what to choose if I was in this good dilemma.

UPDATE: forgot your were a resident of OREGON, forget UOP and pick OHSU, u get a new building (soon), and get to save so much money compared to UOP. Consider the potential money saved is an actual scholarship!

Don't forget guys that with the extra year from UOP you could just do a paid AEGD and get even more clinical experience and apply for a speciality during that year. You'd be on the same timeline as everyone else that way.

If I were in your situation, I'd pick OHSU over UOP, because
1) Cheaper (even though you'd get out a year early at UOP)
-OHSU costs $259k for 4 years, and UOP costs about $364k. So even in the one year you got early, you'd have to make more than 100k in that first year to make up the money you lost by not going to OHSU

2) Proximity to home - never underestimate the ease and power of being close to home

3) Both locations are good, you're used to Oregon, and SF is good, too.

But really, OHSU is much better than UOP for an Oregon resident! Good luck 🙂

This is incorrect, it's not the first year that matters, its the marginal year in your career meaning you potentially get one more year of work before you retire/die. So really you're gaining a high earning year at the end of your career.

Hmm...I'm not really understanding what you're trying to say...but, yes, but generally, one year in the grand scheme of your life would even out. And most pre-dents are looking at how much money can you save immediately, or in the near future. Additionally, $259k or w/e in loans would accrue much less interest than $364k or w/e it was. And you'd have to have an even more aggressive payment plan to pay off the loans for UOP.

Also, what will a high earning year do for you if you've already had to invest over 100k extra? UOP's a great school, I really like it. But in this situation, if I were the OP, I'd go to OHSU, because saving as much money as you possibly can is crucial in this economy.

I'd go with UOP in that situation then, but that's just a personal preference. Also, it depends on whether you wanna specialize or not. At OHSU, you would have more time to look into specializing, and though it's possible at UOP, it's definitely harder, I'd say.

For you i would definitely go with OHSU. It has a great reputation for clinical excellence and is much cheaper. I think think OHSU is right on par academically as UOP and won't miss out on anything, besides saving an extra year.

If i were you, i would really analyze your personal ability to study and work hard. Although you are only at UOP for three years, the first year is extremely taxing and difficult. Like i said above, i think you will academically and clinically get a similar education at both schools, it will just take you a year longer at OHSU.

If you think you can handle the academic rigor, i would suggest UOP. You get out a year earlier, you will have brand new buildings/facilities, and the opportunity to live in SF might be a once in a lifetime chance.
