this is from the FAQ's, and among a lot of info in there, i'm just curious if its still accurate information . . .

2) How competitive is anesthesiology?

USMLE Step 1 score:
There is more latitude here than some people think. If you have a good application in general, a lower score won't keep you from matching somewhere. A higher score can definitely compensate for a mediocre application. Keep the following guide in mind when setting expectations for receiving interview offers:
<200 -- community and low-mid tier academic programs
200-215 -- mid-high tier academic programs
215-230 -- top academic programs
230+ -- will get interviews at almost every top program applied to

still true?

Pretty close.
There's still a LOT of programs out there. The one number that I think would be higher is the top tier academic programs. When I think of top, I'm thinking like the top 5 and your scores will have to be in the 240 and above category to get in. I'd say a 230 will definitely get you an interview everywhere if you're decent everywhere else in the application. 220 will get you interviews just about everywhere, 220-200 will get interviews at plenty of strong places, maybe even some 'top' 5, who knows if the rest of the package is solid. Less than 200 and a US grad will get you enough interviews to match, probably at some place pretty decent. Probably a bit higher for FMG's.

Really, awesome. I thought the interest in gas had surged again. Is it just the shere number of programs?

imho as a med student gearing up for match (so take what I say with a grain of salt because I haven't done it yet) it seems that gas is super competitive at the top programs....but because there are so many programs if you are an average student and willing to go anywhere you have a pretty good shot at getting in somewhere. (There are always exceptions in both directions...good candidates go unmatched and some one with an average score ends up some place great.)
