Is it worth sending an update letter Pre II as I just found out that one of my research projects is being published. It was published to a rural journal with a focus on reducing healthcare disparities for rural populations. Something that I believe would look strongly on me as two of the schools I want to send update letters to are rural focused. Just wanted to know opinions as Im torn on what to do.

Do the schools accept updates? To my knowledge, most don't until you get the II. Can also look to see if adcoms have answered that question in podcasts or threads in the past. My vote is to not send it until after your II and talk about it in your interview. Some adcoms see it as applicants trying to gain an unfair advantage. (I sent two update letters to a school I interviewed at that I was later rejected from and I think it had the opposite effect).

Did you mention your research in your application and its likelihood of getting published? Are you designated as first author? Do faculty at those schools do similar work? Is your PI "famous" among the scholarly community doing research on rural healthcare disparities or is this person much less well-known?

In general, I would wait until decisions go out, so hold off until mid-October/fall break. Ideally you should wait until you get an II (ask how this could be included in your file).

When you say "published" do you mean a manuscript has been accepted for publication? If it is that's fine to include in an update letter, but I'd wait until late oct./November at the earliest, especially if you can package that publication with other substantive updates
