Hi everyone, I will be applying this June with a 3.8 cgpa and sgpa and a 27 MCAT of 11PS 7V and 9BS. I have made a final school list and wanted to see what you guys think?? Thanks!
@Goro your input is always appreciated!

I think you will have a tough time with allopathic schools. I would apply to more osteopathic schools (maybe add 4 more) and decrease allopathic unless you want to pay for all of them.

What is your state residency? That will make a big difference. In my humble opinion (without knowing your residency)--

*EDIT - since you're a CA resident, here we go...

Remove:
UI-C
UWashington
UVM
Utah
IU
MSU
Mizzou-Columbia
Loma Linda (unless you are Adventist or you know that you can handle their culture/lifestyle/honor code)

Add:
PCOM (DO)
Des Moines (DO)
KCUMB (DO)
UC Davis
UC Irvine

Maybe add:
Jefferson
Temple
Toledo

Don't add MSu if you are OOS because tuition is really high. But it is a great school. I would restructure your list to 15 allopathic and 10 DO schools. And make sure those 15 allopathic schools are at the lower end. I say this because a 27 will screen you out of most places.

I agree with the advice above. I would also remove Georgetown, as you are below the 10th percentile for their MCAT range, they get a ton of applications, and their secondary is expensive ($130 this year).

Are you URM? If not, I think a vast majority of the your allopathic secondary fees will be nothing more than a donation to the school. I've bolded all schools that I think you just get rid of (mainly because of too low of score and not OOS friendly). There are some other schools I left on there (GT, GW, and VCU) only because i've seen some much lower stats get IIs there, but this is usually because of very, very impressive ECs (you didn't list your ECs so idk what your deal is). I also didn't remove Oakland, Central Michigan, or Western Michigan because i'm not 100% about how OOS friendly they are. Add more DO.

Take off Midwestern Chicago, NY Touro.

Add PNWU, CampbellSOM, KCUMB, VCOM, Pikeville, Nova, and perhaps PCOM and MSUCOM.

Make sure you send your secondary to KCUMB early. They filled their class before Xmas this year.

A 27 MCAT is circling the drain for MD schools.

I suggest:

Frank Netter
Loma Linda (but read their list of don'ts)
New York Medical College
Albany
Western Michigan
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College of Wisconsin
Commonwealth
Any DO school.

Someone also mentioned Toledo. Don't bother. Low OOS acceptance and very high OOS tuition.

unless they changed it, Ohio has VERY liberal residency requirements and lets you declare yourself IS after one year (also why the OOS tuition is so high, you only pay it year one). Toledo's worth a shot more than some of the others on the list.

Don't bother with UIC, they're VERY unfriendly to OOSers. Washington is even worse.

  1. U of A (Phoenix)
  2. U of A (Tuscon)

Do not get rid of these schools. Just thin about the secondary (don't half-ass).

They accept up to 50% OOS and usually do, but with waitlist movement and people turning down acceptances, less than that matriculates.

Bonus! If you have a spouse who can work for the University, you get Qualified Tuition Reduction and pay around $1000 a school year. Otherwise, most OOSers get residency within one year.

Do they actually end up taking %50? I know that's their limit, but from what I remember from MSAR, I don't think they actually do. I also think this %50 OOS includes applicants from Wyoming and Montana that they give preference to. Regardless, OP got a 27 on his MCAT which is not competitive for any public schools where OP would be OOS. UofA PHX was actually one of my top choices before I applied since I loved the city and had close friends there, but even I ended up not applying (FWIW, I had a 27 and 32 retake on the MCAT). If he's going to spend money on any MD schools, I don't think either of these should be included. But OP, it's not my app cycle! Just trying to help!

We accepted something like 50% OOS last year--we don't keep track of this until the end of the cycle. Of those we accepted, the OOSers were more likely to decline and thus we were left with a larger portion of ISers. I guarantee you that no preference is given to anyone from a state other than Arizona. If someone has a tie to the state (family, did a summer research stint, degree here), they may get preference over someone who doesn't. Also, the minimum stats for Tucson is a 24 MCAT and 3.0 GPA. The 31/32 average you see is skewed by the two people who got a 40+ in that class.

EDIT: Phoenix is an oddball. They have a strange process that I don't understand.

Ok I will edit the list a little bit. @usmd01 I have attended a pre professional program stint at Arizona State so do you think that will give me an edge at Arizona schools?

I thank everyone else for the feedback on the list. I still do not know how many DO schools I will apply to since I don't want to apply to more than 10, but the schools I'm applying to have multiple campuses(e.g Touros and Lecoms) so I don't know if I should add other DO's

By the way, Im applying to SLU, Loyola, Georgetown, and Creighton only because I go to a Jesuit undergrad and am told that we get priority at those schools

An edge, perhaps not, but it's definitely a tie to Arizona! Build on your time spent here, what you saw, what you liked, if you got a feel for the area.
