Hi,

Throwaway account because I don't want to be identified. I'm on three waitlists right now with no acceptances, however at least one of them I am in a "competitive position" according to the dean of admissions.

I've already written letters of interest/intent to the schools (one intent, two interests), but I wanted to send them another update I'm just not sure if it has enough "content" to merit its own letter.

I participated in a pig vivisection at a close medical school as part of my physiology course where I was able to push different neurotransmitters to study the effect on its cardiology, was able to sever its baroreceptor feedback, etc. Probably the most amazing part was opening up the chest cavity and giving a cardiac massage. It was really a surreal experience and the entire time I couldn't stop thinking about how amazing it was.

If I could draft up a page on this experience and what it meant to me, do you think it would be a good "update" to the medical schools? I wasn't sure if some admission committees would not be to fond on the ethics/if this would make me look bad.

I don't think it is worthy of an update because it was just a one time thing. If it had been ongoing over a month or so, then I would update them.

Also, do the schools do a ranked waitlist or do they review all applications again to add new people. If it is ranked then your position will probably not change even with updates.

I think as far as updates go, it really depends on the school. From what I have seen on SDN, some schools want to hear anything and everything to know that you're really interested, while other schools don't care as much and might even get annoyed if they think you're wasting their time. You've probably done it already, but maybe try to find out more about how your schools' admissions offices feel about updates generally.

As for the experience you mentioned, personally I would not base an update only on that unless I knew that it was a school that really cares about frequent updates - I might mention it more briefly as part of a larger update. That's just my opinion though.

Good luck! Hope you get off at least one of those lists!
