I have an interview at a med school in the next few weeks, and I just received grades this semester that I think would really help my application. Should I update the med school BEFORE I attend the interview, or would it be better to wait until after?

You answered your own question.

If it is good news, send it. If not, don't.

Why would you NOT give them everything positive you can, especially given that you are interviewing in January??

Sorry, you misunderstood. I am asking whether it would be more beneficial to send positive news before or after a scheduled interview. I guess ASAP makes the most sense...

Unlike the others, I would wait until after the interview - that way you have a card left in your hand in the event you get waitlisted. If you get accepted post-interview, then it didn't matter. If you get waitlisted, you can play that card later in the form of an update letter.

I highly doubt that, in the big scheme of things, this past semester of grades is going to influence a reject vs. waitlist vs. accept decision at this point. An update letter in the future, however, very well might be the difference between an accept vs. reject decision if you find yourself on the waitlist. An update on grades is a great reason to send a letter if necessary and, in so doing, you can also squeeze in the other "juicy" stuff: interest in the school, updates on ECs, etc..

This is certainly a credited POV...however, with that said, it is worth noting I have seen at a couple schools that once the committee reviews your app post-interview, any/all updates will not make a difference any longer (this is applicable to those waitlisted and submit updates in hope of "improving their spot on the list" or jumping off the list). If a school prescribes to this philosophy, best to get your updates in before the committee gives you your "score".

Know thy school and decide accordingly.

Definitely agree - my position is obviously useless if the school won't accept/consider post-interview correspondence.
