A very wise man at one of my interviews last year straight up told me this:
There are too many people applying for adcoms to look at everyone's trends and to discern why someone might have a "sub-par" GPA (3.5 aint too bad, OP). The sheer numbers of applicants relegates adcoms to using numbers for cut-offs, so that both helps and hurts, depending on your MCAT/GPA.
I took this to mean that life is all about scores and crap like that. There are just too many premeds and too little resources at most schools to do it any other way.
