Updating my CV, planning to apply to EM programs in this fall

I know that many EM programs are looking for folks w/ unique background so I don't know what kinda stuff I should include in my CV (especially the hobby session)..... you know... what's appropriate, what's not

Aside from the typical research projects, jobs, school organizations, interviewer, etc, I want to include things that are unique to make myself stand out of course but I dunno if some of the things might be perceived negatively... just need some opinions from some of youse...

1. I was a rock photographer/videographer, even did a couple shoots for a rock and roll hall of fame inductee (an attending I worked with in the past strongly advised against including this because he thinks it's all about drugs and sex, which is not). I still do some pro-bono stuff in my current city.

2. I've done a lot of music editing, remixing and what not back in Chicago and current;y I work as a resident DJ at a popular bar in town (yes, it's not easy to do that while you are on your surgery rotation but I manage)

3. I've done some PR gigs in Chicago back in the days and I still do some PR gig for fashion designers in town.

I don't know. I think it's a fine line between making yourself look interesting and making yourself look like a ****-off who will not focus on your day-job properly.
What do you guys think?

ps: I am just using a new account because I want to remain anonymous to people from school.

We just had a CV writing conference last week.

They told us to make a section of our CV about outside activities/interests.

So long as you don't make that section too big I'd say it sounds like a good thing to do. But I would show it to my dean of students and see if they agree that it looks right and is a good idea.

I agree with your gut instinct, you don't want to look too distracted. I would primarily include what you did before medical school on your CV and place less emphasis on what you did during.

It could come off less like you have an ability to balance multiple things and more like you are not focused on medicine.

This book is pretty good at detailing CV and interview strategies as well: http://medstep1prep.blogspot.com/2011/01/how-to-compete-in-residency-match.html

Go ahead and include it all for sure. The issue you will have is where to put it. If they were long-term or full-time things then I would actually put them in the activities section of your CV under employment on ERAS.

If they were just hobbies you dabbled in then its just going to be a short list on the last page of ERAS but it will still be read (often that was all my interviewers had read about me).

Keep in mind - you don't actually upload your CV to ERAS. Our school never told us that and a bunch of my classmates spent time making it pretty. All you're going to do is enter the stuff you did into boxes in the ERAS application. Then it makes a very ugly CV for you.

THIS IS HUGE!!! And you'll be really pissed if you make this perfect CV and then you have to upload it and it looks like garbage...though everyone's looks like garbage.

I would include it all, if you can't find an area to put it in there is an "activities/hobbies" section on your CV on eras.

thanks for the heads up, guys... really appreciate it

Ya, I think I'm gonna send my CV to my dean first just to make sure.
One of the main concern is that I am just an average student (slightly above national mean Step1, mostly HPs, etc. So I don't want the PDs to think that I'm a **** off haha.. though I think I am...
