hey,

i was curious if anyone here knows any people who received the dean's scholarship at upenn. if so, do you know their stats? thanks!

where i interviewed there, they said you needed a 3.78 to be considered. 😱 Though it may be higher this year.

Though all of the students say that everyone gets $10,000 or $15,000 scholarship.

EVERYONE?! 😱 WOW! Did they tell you the DAT score required too? Or is it just a GPA thing?

yeah when i was there, they said gpa of 3.75 or higher...

but since they didn't mention anything about a minimum DAT score, i take it that they think gpa is more important for this scholarship th an DAT score? does anyone know?

i don't understand what you meant by the 10K/15K scholarship...everyone gets it? that sounds kinda unrealistic...

I believe that the students there said everyone gets between 10,000 -15,000 in the form of alumni scholarships and donations. So the scholarships just aren't limited to the Dean's scholarships.

The students we talked to really didn't elaborate on it a whole lot. They just kind of mentioned it in passing and then didn't really bring it up again. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

hmm...that's interesting..these are scholarship, and not just financial aid that we have to repay in the future?

well, does anyone know of anyone who received this scholarship and what their stats were?

When I was there, all they said was that the top 25 or so accepted applicants would get this. They didn't mention any cut-off numbers. I also talked to a student who received it and said it was easy to get ... I couldn't straight-out ask him his stats though. Does the 3.78 GPA have to be cum gpa?

No, not everyone gets a scholarship - of any amount-, although scholarships are handed out to about 20-25% of the class and they are used as recruitment tools and not finances (i.e. need based). Usually applicants need at least a 3.8+ gpa, 20+ DAT scores, already have or will have a degree, and there seems to be an age component as well. I still don't know how they go about selecting the scholarship as all of the classmates that I thought received one didn't (in other words, the ones that met these criteria).

how does the age component work? Is it better if you are younger or older? What a weird thing to factor in.

Was there any correlation with scholarships and undergrad schools?

How much is the dean's scholarship anyway?

It seems to me that Penn likes to give it out to younger applicants than those a bit older than 22-23. Of course this is what I have gathered from talking to other students and trying to divine the mysteries of admissions around here.

The scholarship is for 50% off of tution, which comes out to about $21k. Desi is a 3rd year student and I haven't seen him around here in a long time (or in the school for that matter).

I can tell you that Penn expects to get over 2,000 applications this cycle (1,400 have already been received and processed) and they will be interviewing ~600 applictants for ~115 seats. Thus what might have been competitive three years ago isn't necessarily going to be competitive this cycle (i.e. someone with 20AA on the DAT versus someone with 22/23AA on the DAT) - infact, it probably won't as the matriculating stats keep climbing each year. 🙁

At my interview, they said that Penn won't be interviewing more people this year than they have in the past (300 something people) despite the rise in applications ... where did you hear 600 interviewees?

anyone know anything about this?

Does anyone know anything about the dean's scholarship this year?? My stats are above the minimums mentioned before, and I'm young (if that really is a factor...?) but I didn't receive it. I'm not trying to whine, because I REALLY want to go to Penn and was more than thrilled to be accepted, but I just wouldn't be able to afford it otherwise.

I called Corky and she said that if people don't use theirs, the scholarships do get recycled. Does anyone know what they're looking for this year and who they're trying to recruit? I don't know if there's a good way to present myself, or there's a shot that some people won't be accepting their scholarships?

I'm not trying to be selfish, this just makes the decision for me for which school I go to.

Also, what's this about other scholarships, 10K or 15K or whatnot? Are they common? Can you get some bigger ones once you've already been there for a few years? I know a dentist that got his in his second half.

heeelp

I'm wondering how it gets recycled. Do you have to chase the scholarship? Or if 5 out of 25 chose not to use it, then 26th-30th get it automatically? If that's the case, will school call you to notify you've won the scholarship? Or you won't find out until you actually matriculate Penn? Maybe I'm asking quetions you might have no idea......

I was pretty positive that I could win. 😴

I really don't know what they are looking for, honestly, other than you need to have a degree or will have one by the time you enter dental school. 🙁 In regards to the recycled scholarships, I imagine that it is just like a waitlist, if someone turns it down they go to the next person. As far as the $15k scholarships - I haven't heard of them (just the Dean's scholarship). Of course it is entirely possible that they do exist, but rather I have never heard of them - either from the administration or students.

All I know is that when I called Corky, she said that the money is returned to the big scholarship pool and they make another decision. She didn't specify just going down the list, so I don't know if they start again from their top pics from before, or if they do have a graded list to make it easy for them.

I think I remember SOMETHING from the intro at the interview where you can continue to receive scholarships until the moment you graduate...? I forgot the details, but it seems like alumni are pretty generous. Can anyone validate this?
