How does this program compare to SMP programs for those who have borderline gpa's (3.3-3.4ish)? Is it better to do a smp program for the masters or does UPENN have better links to med schools than say g town or evms?

Well...you dont really have access to linkage programs through the special science program.

Keep in mind that if you do an SMP program you would be starting (or adding to) a graduate level gpa. Whereas, with this program you would be adding to your undergrad gpa...I am not sure if that makes a diff for you.

With UPENN, I think the only attraction to the program is the name. Besides that it is just a regular postbacc program (but without all the linkage programs). The Special Sci program does have an "Accelerated Acceptance" program with RWJ-UMDNJ

Yeah...I am rambling!
I would say go with the SMP program b/c: 1. you have the opportunity to demonstrate that you can handle a first year medical school curriculum...and if you rock it then you will be set for first year

good luck

as i wrote in a PM, i disagree with riceman....as a penn ss student, I think someone with your good GPA would get into med school after only a few classes....3.4 + 4-5 more A's will put you in good shape in a short period of time relative to a masters....although i'm not too familiar with the details of gtown is it one year or 2? that might change my opinion....

either way you really cant go wrong i have know many penn and gtown students who have starting from way lower gpa's than yourself and have done just fine.
