I am trying to decide between the post bac programs at Columbia and UPenn (for those with little to no science background). I would appreciate any guidance on the differences between the programs and also thoughts on the pluses and minuses of both.

The main difference I see is that you take small night/weekend classes at Penn while at Columbia classes are with undergrads during the day.

Is there a difference in availability or quality of volunteer/research opportunities between the two?

Thanks in advance!!

I will be starting the Penn prehealth program this fall. I dont know much about the Columbia program, but I do know that Penn offers a research opportunity within the Emergency Department of (I think) HUP. It is structured like a class and we will be taught how to gather research as well as actively collecting data. As for volunteering, there are tons of hospitals in Philly that would love people working for free! I hope this helps a little.

I just finished two years in Upenn's Special Science Program for those with some science background. I believe that Upenn's program is the oldest of its kind in the country but of greater importance....you have the full support of a pre-health advisory board during the process with the promise of a pre-health advidory board letter after completing a certain number of courses.

There are many pros to taking evening classes as well. This gives you the opportunity to work full-time or part time during the day or even volunteer. You're also taking your courses with all to mostly post bacs and it's nice to take courses with ppl in the same boat. Upenn's hospital has plenty of research opportunities and you'll hear about them on a regular basis from our pre-health advisors

How are the night/weekend profs?

Anyone from Columbia out there that can provide some insight?

Thanks for the replies!
