UPenn vs HES

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i posted to you in the UPenn thread

But it depends on whether you are in the SSP or the Pre-Health program

I spent the last year at the HES in Boston and had a great experience. Feel free to PM me with questions.

One major factor to consider: HES is $800/class.

if you got into SSP at UPenn, I wouldn't recommend HES either. I called them before applying and they recommended I not do so because I had all the pre-req's and thats mostly what their program was for... not for higher level science classes. I haven't been to Philly, but Boston and it's surrounding cities like Cambridge are absolutely amazing! I visited Harvard's campus when I was in boston and its quite pleasant - except for all those damn tourists (like me then!) going around campus all the time! 😛

To kinda sort re-post my answer in this thread - if you got significant science experience, HES isnt as productive for you. HES is def cheaper per class, but SSP is designed more for those having done the pre-reqs whereas HES (from the mouth of the Director) is more designed for those needing the pre-reqs.

Personally, I love Boston but havent spent much time in Philly. I cant imagine enormous differences

No wonder they call themselves the athens of america.

this always make me laugh because it's a) utterly ostentatious b) like saying watermelon is the lemon of gourds. what does it even mean?

Thanks to all of you! I really appreciate your input. Im assuming SSP = special science program (with science background)?

well I'm the career changer. I have no science background... except one class being Intro to Chem to fulfill my general education requirement at my undergraduate institution.

SO i post the question again? and you're right i shouldn't care too much about the city, but i think city matters in order for me to feel "comfortable" to do well...

LOL its funny... im sure both have great faculty. great preparation for MCAT... etc. but one is 900/class (HES) and other is 2200/class (UPenn). I think UPenn has a better success rate (but found no where on the net for comparison). I mean UPenn actually rejects applicants into their pre-health program- has 95% medical school acceptance rate... according to them, UPenn. Im also assuming HES accepts many applicants and have read somewhere on this post that about 50 students get the sponsorship which is the point of going to that program. and almost all (48) of the students sponsored get into medical schools...

Please help again... i appreciate you all for your responses but you all thought i was asking for the SSP... its for pre-health for people who hasn't taken any science courses.

thanks!!!

HES doesn't prepare you for the mcat beyond the classes you take.

Guju - i am very very familiar with Boston. I just don't think its that diff than Philly. There is more in common between Boston and Philly than between Philly and Atlanta or something. They are both older cities and relatively similar. I don't think the weather is massively different either. We aren't talking Florida to Alaska here. If there is a temp diff its minor.

Anyways - I would say HES is more cost-efficient but I think UPenn does more to help the student get into MS. I got the impression from HES that you are very much on your own, and don't get much guidance. But it is way way cheaper.

lol I think we are in agreement on the educational stuff Guju - just not the climate and cities!

I never been to boston. ive been to philly for the interview. west philly where Upenn and Drexel are located is a very nice area. North philly on the other hand by temple... :\ lol lost for words haha
but this is like that in any city... I only live 20 min outside of NYC

Yes HES way way cheaper. I knew HES is more hands off approach... and Upenn has more advising... but those of you who went there or going there, how much advising?

This is why I want to find a source of these programs success rate. HES appears to accept more people. Upenn more selective. So i think selective program is perhaps better? :\ AH! idk! lol

but again I REALLY thank all of you with your input and any info! THANKS!

you are going to Upenn in the fall right?? good luck. 🙂
Ya I picked it over Tufts, UMDNJ and BU. Where are you going? I know you got in tufts and one of the drexel programs

Audman - i dont think HES actually rejects anyone. From what I remember its open admissions, aka as long as you meet the basic criteria you are good.
I liked UPenn due to its clear cut linkage programs (lots for PreHealth, less for SSP) and good academic record. Lot of neat classes too for upper level science, and to be honest the name might carry a little bit more.
Good luck to you!
