Congratulations to all those who have been recently accepted and good luck to those who are still waiting. It's not over until the fat lady sings or at least until the first day of classes. I will be at Pitt for the next four years and would like to know who my future classmates are. Anybody from southern california by the way?

I'm so there dude. As of now, I'll be at Pitt. I really liked the school, the people, and the city.

I'll be there, too! UPitt is the best Dental school that I have ever seen! We will have a lot of fun friends! I am glad that you also made the right decision! The students who chose UPenn will regret it the first day, as the facility is old! I was not ready to pay 200K for an old facility! The simulation center will really help us to understand the lab part of dentistry!
See you in August 03!
AJ:clap: 😀 😎

Are you guys going to put down parent info on the fafsa. I know that at Pitt on the day of the interview they told us not to put down parent info - but I thought that the private lenders required that info. And is there a cap on how much of the health professional loans we can get since at Pitt they give us a maximum of 13000 for living expenses?

guys, I still can't decide between Upitt, BU, and U of TN. Temple and UMDNJ do have alot of patients, but I just don't feel comfortable with the surrounding areas. Location-wise, I thought Upitt was in a very nice area except the building was on the hill(it will be a good workout to walk up the hill everyday!🙂 I forgot how their Preclinics looked like. Did they have enough for every student? and I don't think I heard anything about the number of patients they have at Upitt. Can you give me your reasons for choosing Upitt and if you have any more info on BU or UMDNJ, feel free to tell me.( i don't think any of you guys have applied to UT).
thanks

Hi Guys!

I was also accepted to Pitt. I'm still waiting on my state school but I'm very excited. It seems like we will have an awesome class! Do you guys know if Pitt has a White Coat Ceremony? I want my parents to see Pitt in all of its glory!!!

--4.oo

P.S.- GradM.S.--- Southern Cali is in da house.... reprezent!!!

Anyone know about Pitt and if they have a white coat ceremony? I haven't gotten my packet in the mail yet!

AJ-

Do you know those DentSim's were developed and tested at PENN? PENN is 125 years old, so yes there are some old parts, but it seems like we will have some new areas to work at soon.
I'm not talking about R.Schattner, but the rooms that used to be the OMS, Ortho, etc Depts that have been moved to the new building and have cleared up for us.

There is a new dean, new 70,000 sq foot building and the new class of 007.

Just like there always will be James Bond movies, there always will be PENN.

As I said, Old is not gld, OLD is OLD! Nobody can convince me for UPENN! I rather would prefer to go to TEMPLE than to UPENN! You guys will 1. pay more tuition ( probably that's what you mean by GOLD) 2. your career will be more theoretical than anything else! I have two friends who graduated from this school and again: WE WANT TO BE DENTISTS not MD's!!!!
Everyone has his/ her own opinion but I still think that why to pay more if the same and even better quality is already offered at UPitt?
AJ
😀

Hey, for all of you who are going to UPitt, do you know whether UPitt is a Problem based learning(PBL) institution? Also tell me more about how their module clinics work if you have any idea?
Does UPitt have dentsim as well?
thanks

james

2touth03,

don't knock it till you rock it...I picked Upenn over UNC, and UNC is just as new as you can get. Upenn has a great atmosphere and is the full package. We're all going to learn the same stuff in the end anyway, some of us will just have a better time doing it. Penn's as good as it gets....

Went to Penn, loved it, got accepted, but decided to attend my state school.
First of all, Penn has 125 years of dental experience under its belt, and their faculty will probably be writing the text books you use @ Pitt dental this upcoming fall. I'm not trying to knock on Pitt, but Penn is by far the best dental school in the northeast. Best in preparation for the boards, matching into specialties, and supporting diversity. By mentioning such things about Penn, it really demonstrates your knowledge about the school and its history. If I wanted brand new facilities and state-of-the-art instruments, I probably would've headed to Nova, but success doesn't reside in instruments or the pretty desks, it resides in experience and years of evolution ! Like Desi said, you could count on Penn being there for whatever advancements occur in the near future.

Bottom line - Penn Rocks !!

AJ:

The last time I checked no Ivy League school was new. Usually that is what attracts so many people to PENN, Columbia, and Harvard: the history and experience they have with them. Also, maybe you didn't get to see the new 70,000 square foot Robert Schattner Center which opened November 2002. You can't get newer than that, can you?

Don't be bitter, we all will be in the same place in four years. Like Erin said, the atmosphere is what attracted me to PENN. What's the use of new facilities if the atmosphere sucks.

Like Damian said, PENN will be up-to-date in all aspects of dentistry: Clinically, Research, and Academically. Not many other schools have this package. And if you wanted the best facilities you should have went to NOVA.

An early line drawing of the Evans Building, the flagship building of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, which was completed in 1915 and widely recognized as the most advanced facility of its kind. This is the "old" building you are referring too. Well this is a museum as well which includes various artifacts of dental history.

This is what the Evans museum/building looks like today:

evans.jpg

PENN is involved with up-to-date services including online services in conjunction with Harvard Medical School including:

ss.gif

Like I said, the DentSim was developed at PENN:

dentsim.jpg

They are up-to-date in the classroom as well including structured online "virtual" class room experience which includes help, and structure for their classes:

virtual.jpg

Along with the Evans Museum (the "old" building) the new Schattner Center is up and Running plus there is a 10+ story dental research center behind the Evans building. Also, there are 6 satellite private clinics where 3/4th year students work to get the feel for the real private practice:

rschattner.jpg

PENN's main clinic sees over 14,000 patients each year and its satellite clinics see over 18-20,000 patients each year.

PENN just started a program called PENNSmiles. A Mobile program for students to get more experience throughout Philadelphia and to help people who are disadvantaged, especially kids.

Just living in Philly is worth going to PENN. A city with such a diverse culture and historical significance. It is a blessing just to walk where America's forefathers risked their lives to develop a country what it is today:

Just writing this message, I feel even more privelidged to be attending this prestigious and awesome university.

Say whatever you want. PENN is awesome!!

desidentist,

Very impressive indeed. I now fully understand why you chose PENN. I really like PENNSmiles program and great clinical opportunity. Now I'm motivated to apply to PENN. Thanks for sharing info about PENN.

Luminous_1

Thanks Luminous.

I could have put much much more stuff about PENN, but this gives a glimpse to this good school.

Also, to all your people still debating on where to go, or to those who are applying in the future make sure you look at all the facts. There will be people on SDN just saying a stereotypical statment which is not true. Who knows they might have gotten rejected by that certain school and wish to demean it.

UPENN vs UPITT
Get the hell over it. Why do you guys get your shorts up in a bunch as soon as someone says something to your disliking about your future school. At the end of 4 years we will all be dentists. It is time to get over this frat boy attitude. I think its time to grow up and please lets return back to the topic which is who got into UPITT.

Go Gators !!! WHOOO HOOOO ! 😛 😛

Yeah, very awesome, and impressive, indeed. I still like Penn.
😍 😍 and Philly.
Back to the topic, I didn't get accepted. I canceled my interview, and they put on Infosource that "Application Denied"😛 😛 😛

Its a pain to scroll through all the irrelevant pictures to get to the posts that don't have to do with Pitt. . .would you guys mind posting Penn pictures in a Penn thread?

For the record. . .I didn't apply to Penn (no ties to Philly and no gut feeling about the city... nothing against the school, I'm sure its great)

I don't really see what all the fighting is about except the fact that everyone wants to feel that their school is the best. I think we should all be happy and congratulate each other for getting in to the schools we like the best. I went to undergraduate at Pitt and got in to both Pitt and Penn Dental Schools. I really like it here at Pitt and my family all lives in Western PA, (plus Eagles aren't even worthy of carrying the Steelers jock straps). However, when i got my acceptance to Penn they offered me the big Dean's Scholarship thing ($80,000+ scholarship). So my gf and myself packed up the old car and took a trip to philly to check out the city and hand in my deposit. I thought both the schools were very nice and didn't have any major complaints about either one. I had 3 priorities, get a good dental education, not break the bank doing so, be close as possible to friends and family. I liked Pitt a lot but with the scholarship Penn was actually cheaper and Penn is just such a good name. (NOTE: I am not someone who judges any education on name for that matter but I'm also not so naive as to believe that no one else does either. I realize that others do care about a name and to some ivy is really important.) While I was in Philly I got a call from someone at Pitt I was playing phone tag with and he told me that I would get a scholarship to Pitt, that would again make Pitt more affordable in terms of tuition and other expenses. Plus the fact that apartments in Pittsburgh are cheaper than Philly, I again changed my mind and decided that Pitt is for me. I would not in a million years badmouth Penn it has a great program that anyone of us should be proud to graduate from. The funny thing i noticed reading these posts is that we are starting to sound like the Pre-Med weenies. I enjoyed the fact that US News doesn't rank Dental Schools because therefore we have no proof what school is better than what. I also like it because now people are not motivated to just go to the highest rated school where they get accepted. With no rankings we just make our decisions based on where we liked best, location, price etc. No matter what in 4 years we will all be dentists (knock on wood). So I want to be the first to congratulate the Penn people and say hey to the Pitt people, I can't wait to meet you guys during orientation. Remember in a few years we will all be colleagues.

Just a thought...
Steve

How many Cali peeps out there thinking about heading to the land of the steeler?!?

Yes, indeed: well said, scist2.

I have to defend my school. I don't want some ignorant person saying things that may affect someones decision. A lot of people depend on this forum. They don't know any other pre-dental student and I believe people should understand how much a statement may influence others. And I don't want other people to "feel sorry" for all of us at PENN, cuz we'll be living it up. And I hope everyone finds their school where they can find their niche and live it up.

Desi's right about this. I wouldn't say I depend on this forum, but it is definitely one of the only places I have to talk and hear about the things that pre-dents are concerned with. There are about a jillion people from my undergrad going to med school next year, but only three applied to dental school - and the other two have been flat-out rejected so they don't want to talk about it. I'm sure there are others in similar a situation, so it's important that everyone's different opinions are shared and evaluated.

I will say that i came on to this thread to see who else is going to Pitt. Instead I get all this BS about Penn plus a photoscrap book. Nobody cares that you are going to Penn or wants to see your pictures. If they did they make a thread called "Has anybody got any picutres of Penn? or maybe "The Penn bragging thread". Who cares? Not me.
In fact if you have time to read all the posts on this board (especially ones not pertaining to the schools you arent going to), respond to an arguement, surf the web for pictures (double dork points if you have them saved on your hard drive already), and then post the pictures and brag about some damn school nobody on this thread gives a **** whether you go there or not. Get a life. Go to a club and celebrate, find a girl and impress her with the $$$ your gonna make, or go study histology but for heaven's sake, shut the fu@k up about Penn already.

drmeathead:

I could care less if you don't care about PENN. I'm not trying to brag but to set people straight. No one has a right to post up information that is false and demean other schools without having accurate information. I didn't say **** about PITT I'm just representing my school.

So rather than acting pissy you should calm down and realize why this forum is here in the first place.

If you wanna just talk about PITT post about PITT, if you bring other schools into it and especially if you want to talk trash about other schools people who represent those schools have a say and I will come in and express myself.

DesiDentist

PS: Do you think your gonna extinguish flames by adding more fuel to the fire? I sensed the flames were being extinguished up until your f*cked up post.

Again, I wonder "why would someone who has nothing to do with a school be nosey enough to read through a thread and spend the time posting about why their school is better?"

I can honestly say I haven't read a single post on a thread which has been designated for another school. Why? I have no reason to. I don't have time to read through every single thread on this board. That is why it would be nice if we posted information related to the topic so we wouldn't have to sift. Chill. . .I'm happy with where I'm going, you're happy with where you are going. How wonderful it is that we all have options and we all have different preferences. . .otherwise, we would all want to go to the same school and there wouldn't be room enough for all of us 😀

Also, I wouldn't give these boards too much credit as far as how they influence people's decisions. Its nice to know when schools are interviewing, what stands out about the school and when letters are coming, but ultimately, I'd have to say cost, first-hand impressions, and personal preference are going to have a lot more say in an individual's decision than what someone on the pre-dental board has said.

I was told by people on this board that I was too late applying to schools. If I had posted my sub 3.4 GPA, I'm sure I would be told that I would never in a million years be considered by schools. You would find my 19-20s DATs simply average. You might tell me that my research experience means nothing. . . If I had listened, I would have cheated myself.

So lets step down off our soapboxes and put our egos aside. . .

I didn't say **** about PITT I'm just representing my school.

Who cares? If you dont go to Pitt dont post on the Pitt thread. Penn is a great school with a great rep. Your defense of them isnt needed. You wanna defend...go play safety for the Eagles. Your pseudo-gangsta flava isnt needed either. You want to represent...go be in Congress. You want to talk about Penn? Start a Penn thread. You can call it "10 reasons why Penn is the best and I am a dueche"

If you wanna just talk about PITT post about PITT

This is the Pitt thread what else would i come to talk about. Now wait I forgot...this is also the place you come to show photos from your interview (who does that?) and blabber the wonderousness of the University of Pennsylvania.

if you bring other schools into it and especially if you want to talk trash about other schools people who represent those schools have a say and I will come in and express myself.

Of whom did I talk trash? What bad things did I say about Penn dingus? I only commented on your stupid bull****. Others took potshots at your school, not me. If you are using "you" in the plural form then why did you directly address me? Go take an English grammer course. Oh and nice run-on sentence. The Ivy League must be so proud to have you.

yo desi, you gotta chill with UPENN stuffs.
you seem to be on almost every thread about PENN and "defending" your school.
honestly, it's getting annoying and somewhat immature.
we know PENN is great. obviously you are very proud of it.
congrats and have fun at PENN.

thanks for the spell check...

Type-S I find it amazing that you have time to post up to tell me not to defend PENN, but you have not even taken the time to answer Rimpy's thread when she asks: Why Columbia?

Help her out!! This is what this forum is about, letting other people utilize the knowledge you have rather than just talking down on people.

You guys, chill.
Saying that you wouldn't spend money on a school because it is old is not a thing you should say because the building doesn't make a dentist, it doesn't help you get your license....Only your hard work will make you a successful student.

Let me tell you guys about my personal story with Pitt. I have never told any one this, but it will prove that the building, dentsim lab, etc... doesn't mean anything in the end. The maximum you can stay in the building is from 6am to 12am. And 4 yrs from now, it will be an old one. As soon as you graduate, you leave the town. Who cares about old or new building anymore?

Last June, my friend is a D3 at Pitt introduced me to his professor. The prof. wanted to take the WRB at UOP and he needs an assistant. So, I agreed to help out.

The guy was great. The test went well. In my mind, he is as good as any other dentists that I have assisted before. This guy did his specialty (endo) at Pitt. He had been out to practice 10 yrs. Then has been working at Pitt as a prof. for the last few years.
A month after the test, he called me and said that he failed the WRB. That was more than devastated. I was speechless. And the part that he failed was in clinical. And he is a prof.

I will have to help him next march for another board exam here in SF.
Of course this prof. doesn't represent Pitt clinical aspect. (And I do not mean to trash any school here). But for many out of state students like me or desi, when we have to go to an out of state school, we have to spend money on a school that will help us pass the board when we come back to our state. We couldn't care less about new or old dentsim or sim. All we need are good patients to work on. Because at state boards, we will be required to work on real patients.

If you are in PA and plan to reside in PA after you graduate, no problem. Any school will do. We out of staters have many other issues to consider. If I got into Penn and Pitt at the same time, I would pick Penn, because I have met quite a few residents at UCSF graduated from Penn. And who wants to graduate with 200K in debt and no license? I would rather graduate with 300K of debt and a license.

In the end, only you can make what comes out of it. But like everyone else here said, dentists are dentists, doesn't matter where you went to school, as long as you are good, aim with your license, and ready to make money. Who cares?
But to get that license, oh well? Only if the prof. know how to teach you.

I am going to love all of my future classmates. I swear you guys are so full of passion and have such an attitude. Pitt is definitely going to be the place to be for the next four years. See you all in the fall! If anybody is from the southern california area, we should get together and do a lunch thing!

yo desi, why don't you tell rimpy about everything?
you seem to know every school.
tell rimpy why he/she should not go to columbia.
you got friends all over dental schools. (from what i've read)
you seem to have the "inside stuff". advise him/her.

Let's get one thing straight. This forum is open to everyone's judgement and thoughts, thus anyone could post on a PITT thread, or a Cuban Missle Crisis thread for that matter. Now, Desi did what any other proud student would do and defended his turf , but if bullcrap wasn't posted about Penn originally, then we could've avoided this situation.

Did you skip over the 'Penn students are gonna regret going there' line ? You must've. That particular comment was uncalled for, lame, and immature, with not an ounce of credibility to back it up. Actually, dragonfly9 didn't interview at Penn, never set foot in their facilities, and never experienced a minute on campus. Also, the closest some students come to Penn is this forum, so be conscious of what you type and think because someone predental student in Alaska will take what's posted seriously.

Drmeathead really lives up to her name on this thread. Talk about lacking a well developed nervous system, or maybe her Hox genes are outta wack and her ass developed on her shoulders. First of all, by insulting Desi, you've directly insulted the rest of proud predents out there, and that, quite frankly, is not cool. Vent all you want MissMeathead, it ain't gonna get a biscuit from me.

Peace out man...

I love it 🙂

I've never had an urge to post on studentdoc but this thread really pissed me off. Honestly, a couple of years ago I had no clue what I wanted to do. I thought medicine was for me and one day I was clicking on the pre-dental/dental forums and I saw DesiDentist's posts and I realized something.

There was a ton of passion in these posts. I've kept up with everyone's posts and I am thankful there is a person who goes above and beyond to illustrate his/her passion. DesiD's passion is what got me motivated to look into dentistry and I am so glad I did. This profession is for me and I realized that when I read some of the facts he put on studentdoc.com.

Like Damian12 said everyone has a right to their opinion and dr.meathead you are the bastard here. you insecurity and lack of maturity is evident. I see nothing wrong with DesiD's post he didn't even talk down about PITT. Actually, he told someone on the International thread how good of a school Pitts is.

And Type-S: you can't even defend your school.
Also, drmeathead I see you are interested in studying the Bible, well it sure doesn't look like you learned anything from reading it.

I just wanted to thank Desi for his extreme desire to help others and spreading the "Gospel" of PENN.

Also, PENN will be my #1 choice in 2005. Why? because Desi defended it so well. I'm originally from New Mexico and no one I know wants to go into dentistry here, so I count on this forum for my information.

God Bless everyone.

fanta 😉

OK kiddies, it's time to stop this thread. Take your insults, bad language and hurt feelings and drop them all. Now.

Any more of this and I will begin banning anyone I see flaming anyone else. And that means _anyone_.

This thread is closed. Let's get on to more intelligent discourse.
