Today an email went out to all applicants for UPMC Mercy. Basically if you match this year you are matching to UPitt. Mercy will just be one of the sites you rotate at, but the program will be UPitt. So UPitt will match 20 residents this year. Just thought I would clear things up, that is the email I got.

What about the surgery and medicine programs. Are there rumors that since one specialty is combined that this will be a trend for the other programs?

It will be a huge disadvantage for those who only applied/interviewed at UPitt but not UPitt-Mercy...

Why is that? The email I received indicated Pitt would still match separate, and the programs would become one July 1, 2010.

Here's what was sent from UPitt:

"Thank you again for applying to the University of Pittsburgh Medical CenterÆs
Anesthesiology Residency Program (NRMP#Æs 165204A0 & 1652040CA). It was a
pleasure getting to know you during your interview. As match day approaches,
we wanted to be sure that each applicant is aware of our intent to merge with
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center - MercyÆs Anesthesiology Residency
Program (NRMP #1649040A0).

This merger is taking place as the final step of full integration of the Mercy
Hospital Department of Anesthesiology into our department. Two years ago UPMC
purchased Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh creating UPMC Mercy Hospital. Last
year the faculty in the anesthesiology department at Mercy joined our faculty.
Below are a few more details of the merger and how it will affect you.

The merger will result in an enhanced clinical experience, including
opportunities to care for burn patients and providing care in a
community-hospital environment
The merger may occur as early as July 2010, dependent upon anticipated ACGME
approval

The classes that match to both programs are very likely to begin together as
one integrated class in July 2011

Our class size will increase to 20 residents in the CA-1, CA-2, & CA-3 years
after the merger
Our CBY program will remain at 9 residents
All of the information concerning initial clinical orientation, clinical
rotations and didactics in our program will remain as presented to you during
your interview with us

Please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions regarding
our program or the propsed merger. We wish you the best of luck on Match Day!

I suppose it will be easier for people to get into Mercy than to UPitt. That said, the people who matched into Mercy will get the same training/didactics/faculty as the ones at UPitt.

Rumor has it the UPMC selection committee might make some, um, "suggestions" to the Mercy selection committee.

Sounds like it might stiffen the competition, eh?

BTW, Dan. . .thanks for the info when we met on interview day. You and Lush gave some great insight into the program.

It was nice meeting you and Lush; you guys are gonna be great anesthesiologists.

Oh yeah, my wife said she did take a course from your Dad. Only good things to say!

Maybe, but maybe not. I suspect there are folks not pleased to see the merger announced; if you interviewed at Mercy to have a small, close-knit residency not located in an enormous academic center, "things is different now". Additionally, I was being serious about it being rumor - no one in a position of significance has told us anything about how the ranking will be done, but you've gotta figure there must be some sort of discussion at least.

Thanks for your kind words; it was a pleasure to meet you as well! I really do think folks that like life in Upstate NY will do really well in Pittsburgh, lifestyle-wise. And of course we think the program here is pretty good!

I was serious about getting in touch with any of the residents if you have more questions about UPMC that you want clarification or other viewpoints on. In regards to the merger, my humble opinion is that it further strengthens our residency.

Re: my Pops - funny what a small world it actually is, huh?
