UPMC and DO's

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
AT UPCM Shadyside,St. Margaret, and McKeesport, DO's get picked up for residency pretty easily. At the main University Health Center in Oakland, forget it!! Do's on staff there in PM&R, otherwise, they are scarce! DO's applying to main university health center are on same level as FMG's applying in my opinon. Just unfortunate, but won't find them there.

There are staff DO's in Anesthesia. Are there residents that you know of in anesthesia?

there are definitely several d.o.'s in their anesthesiology residency program. i know that for sure.

Does anyone know if there are DO's in UPMC residency program? I know they have DO's on staff?

I can speak from first hand experience since I have recently interviewed there. In fact, I had heard rumors about how unfriendly UPMC was towards DOs, so I asked the PD about this during the interview (In a 1-1 situation). He told me that there were a few DOs in the class/year. However, he told me that they have difficulty interpretating the COMLEX and therefore it is of benefit to take the USMLE. I also found this view at a couple of programs, but for the most part most Anesthesia programs will allow DOs into their residency programs with very few exceptions. You should definetly apply to the institution if you are thinking about it. It is an amazing program with a lot of happy and friendly residents 😀

Yet another reason why the upcomming class of applications from osteopaths should have a USMLE score on record.

Thanks for the advice about whether or not to take the USMLE. It is helping tremendously and a couple of PDs told me it was the single best thing I could do to improve my application. I owe you one 👍

hell yea....i wouldnt be getting half the interviews im getting, if i didnt take the USMLE.....is it me or is this yr rough for the match?

I grit my teeth everytime you guys advise to take the USMLE because I opted not to take the exam to save an extra few bucks and now I'm regretting it. I am an MS III and am seriously contemplating taking the exam in the summer of 2005. I feel like I have lost sooooo much of the basic science and I would have been much better off had I taken the exam 1 week post-COMLEX.

My question is, would it be possible to just bypass USMLE step 1 and go straight into step 2? Would this be a rode worth pursuing?

Dude, I took it at the beginning of my fourth year. Sometimes, you just got to suck it up and pay the extra money. Look at it as if it were an investment in your future. I also felt the same way though, so I did a lot of studying during my rotations so I did study a lot during the end of 3rd year while everybody else was enjoying their rotations. I would not advise blowing off step I and just taking step II. Most people don't even take step II until January of the 4th year, so it is not very important in deciding who gets interviews. In addition, you will get asked (more like grilled) on the interviews why you did not take the Step I.

...Just my two cents. Take it for what it is.

Can you sit for Step II without a passing Step I score?

Supposedly you can, but I could never figured out how one could do this. You defintely can't do the same for the COMLEX, why should the USMLE allow you to do so. 🙄

Seems to me like heading straight to Step 2 could be a wise decision. You don't have to go back and labor for step 1, while at the same time preparing for COMLEX 2. Plus programs can still compair you to MD students iniformly, assuming that most have taken the test. I think that a high step 2 score, even w/o step 1 could really make a difference for someone. Any thoughts from someone who knows?

Yes. If you do not have the stamina to recram all the basic sci minutae into you skull to take USMLE step I than I would advise you to take step II. You can just take the written and save yourself the $1000 for the clinical.

Before you do any of this call a couple of programs that you are interested in and ask their thoughts on the matter. I can almost entirely assure you that having a USMLE step II on your app will help you greatly as compared to having no USMLE at all.

Now, back to finish off this hellish day.

I "heard" all of the same rumors that UPMC was very DO-unfriendly...matter of fact, in another city, another interviewee found out I was headed to UPMC next & she was "amazed" that I was even invited. Matter of fact, a classmate of mine was interviewing the same day & we meet a couple of DO gas residents there. And, almost immediately when the interview day started, the PD made a statement in front of the group that she had heard that UPMC was a bias against DOs & wished to assure us that there was no such bias & if you had been invited to interview, then you were considered a comeptitive & viable candidate. Being a DO did not make a difference.

just interviewed at UPitt.....seems like a very solid program...and seemed very receptive twds me (a NYCOM student)....i think if you scored well on step 1, they will look at you equally.......residents are ALL happy.....3 DO residents ......being a DO student that took usmle step 1, I HIGHLY ADVISE osteopathic students to take this test bc it is becoming a little more competitive......
