medgator,
see you there, I'll be doing IM there

Congrats! Pittsburgh is the second largest city in PA. Pittsburgh is compact, cultured, safe, neighborly, historic, youthful, and very affordable. Rents are very cheap compared to other city with similar sizes. Even more, you may be able to buy a house during your residency (a number of residents do). If you are looking for a rent and have no car, there are a number of places near UPMC and Carnegie Melon U where you can take a free shuttle bus or walk to the hospital. If you have a car, you can live outside the medical school/hospital area. For more information, you should get in touch with your residency program coordinator or chief residents.

I am starting my intern year in medicine at U Pitt after scrambling into a prelim spot, and wanted to get some general information about the program and good places to live near the hospital. Any advice is greatly appreciated
Welcome to pitt. I am an intern. you want to live in oakland or shadyside. their are several apartments in he area. a 1 bed room will cost between 550 and 800. some will include all utilities in the bill, this is generally a good deal. try and find an apartment near bayard st as you will be able to get the shuttle between presby and ahadyside hospital. the area is safe, the transport to town is good. I dont know if I can name actual apartments on this forum.

How is living in Squirrel Hill or near the Strip?

So, from the paperwork, it looks like internship begins on the 24th, but I'm not clear on when orientation starts.

Any idea? Man, I hoped to get a few extra days off this summer before starting working, but I like the idea of that extra week at the end of the year.

Anyway, can't wait to meet y'all

according to the email I just got, we start June 16th with orientation!! Ugh 😱

I think the orientation is for a week and the real work starts July 1st??? What does say on the orientation schedule? By the way, does anyone knows if they accept ACLS/BLS certification from out of state (like NY)?

Apparently the real work starts June 24th.... allowing us to finish June 23rd, 2006 🙂

someone asked about living in sq hill - i live there now, only 15 min bus ride from the hospitals. on a nice day you can walk it in 45 mins if you so desire. less students/noise/bars in sq hill than shadyside or oakland, unless that's what you are looking for. good luck.

i would not live in oakland unless you like noisy run-down apartments and lots of undergrads. definitely live in shadyside or squirrel hill. much nicer apartments and lots more grad students and young professionals.

upmc is all over pittsburgh and surrounding communities.

but the mother ship is near the undergrad university in oakland.

this is true of south oak, but absolutely wrong wrt north oakland.

Thanks for the link. Pittsburgh appears much more affordable than where I am now. Interestingly, despite all the colleges in the area, Pitt is always listed as one of the worst cities for singles. Do you find this to be true?

Does anyone know the parking situation at UPMC? Do we get parking at the hospital? Do most residents take the buses or drive if they live nearby?

Thanks

parking is free. dont stress. it is actually a benign place. you will have fun.

Has anyone checked out those new apartment complexes being renovated downtown?

Which apartments are those? I am headed to Pitt this weekend to find a place. I supoose I am going to look in Shadyside and squirrel hill, but I would be interested in downtown, if you know of any places.

I read about two in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. One was called Gateway Towers and another was Heinz Lofts. I think one was a condo complex. Sounds like they might be more expensive

Just a word of advice - I'd shy away from living downtown pittsburgh. Although there is a recent trend of people living downtown, and downtown housing seems to be on the upswing, dowtown Pittsburgh turns into a bit of a ghost town after 7:00pm. I wouldn't exactly call "unsafe", but you'd definately feel more secure, have more to do, and more conveniences in Squirrel Hill or Shadyside. The commutes from S. Hill or Shadyside to Oakland would be slightly shorter than the commute from downtown - contsant stream of buses during peak times, and can even walk when it's nice out <takes about 40 mins to walk to S. Hill, less to Shadyside>.

If you're looking for something on the cheap, you might want to check out Bloomfield, Friendship, Greenfield, or Regent Square - slightly less convenient, but can save a bundle in rent. Good luck.

I just got back from looking for a place in Pittsburgh for starting at UPMC this summer.

I rented a place at Heinz lofts. They are awesome places, everything is brand new, its so nice! Its right across the bridge from the strip district, which has an eclectic mix of warehouses, wholesale shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. Its also right down the road from both stadiums. There is also a trail along the river right out front that extends in both directions for miles with nice views of the city.

As for the inside, its incredible, you have to see it to beileve it.

I also looked in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill but opted for Heinz. The price is the same, if not less than Shadyside.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me,

What's the price range we're looking at for living in downtown compared to Shadyside or Sq. Hill? I just found a really nice 1 BR in Shadyside and will be paying 840 or so a month including lots of amenities and a garage. I was reading about the Heinz Lofts.... they look really nice.
