Hello all,

As I am making my rank list, I wanted to just hear thoughts from others and what they feel about these programs.

I feel that all three are amazing programs first off. I feel though that UPMC is starting to become one of the leaders in anesthesia training, even compared to the so-called elite programs I interviewed at: Hopkins, MGH, Mt Sinai when combining all aspects. It appears that Pitt offers some of the best of the best clinical experiences while maintaining resident education and overall happiness. It also is in an emerging city for top healthcare which is very affordable compared to Boston or NYC.

I was wondering what others felt about UPMC from their impressions or from experiences. Additionally I was wondering how you felt it compared to some of the other elite programs (such as UCSF, UWash, etc) that I did not interview at.

Lastly, I was very impressed with U of Roch and BIDMC in Boston and was looking just for any other insight or comments about these just as having more information the better. Thank you and goodluck with the match!:xf:

Disclaimer: I'm a current UPMC resident

I think that we have an excellent residency training program. I more than exceeded all required case numbers by the end of my CA-2 year and feel quite comfortable with my knowledge base/skill set. This has afforded me the opportunity to tailor my CA-3 year to my interests. While other programs certainly offer impressive case volume/diversity, work/life balance, international rotations, protected didactics, state of the art simulation center, etc... I think that this combination of great features and the flexibility to explore them really sets us apart. That and the people. Its a really great group of people to work with and be around.

Sounds like you interviewed at some great programs. Your "problem" is one to be envied. Best of luck in the match!

How competitive is UPMC? What Step 1 would give me a decent shot, I used to live in pittsburgh and love the city. PM me if you want.

Also, BID apparently decreased it's program size to 6 for 2013. I have no information as to why but looking at their numbers they only do ~11,000 surgeries a year (vs. UPMC which does ~27,000) which is small for their hospital (my hospital does around 11,000 and we have 2/3 the number of beds). It's possible they weren't making numbers.

That is the number of categorical positions. They have like 18 spots overall now. That would be a crazy downsize. There is no way they could cover everything.

Disclaimer: I too am a UPMC resident, and LushMD is a very good friend of mine.

I concur with what Lush said, which is essentially the drum I beat when asked about our program. I'm very happy to be here. If there are specific questions about UPMC, please feel free to post or send a PM.

I don't remember the specific Step 1 cutoff for UPMC interview this year. I *think* it was 225, but it may have been 220. Residents are invited to the ranking meetings, and if memory serves, I think mid 260s was the highest score we saw so far this year (one more ranking meeting to go). A 230+ will serve you well, but you most certainly don't need that (I'm proof) to match if your total application package is good. We truly do value having good people in our program.

Lastly, a bit nitpicky, but to clarify, there are WAY more than 27,000 surgeries at UPMC. There are between 6 and 9 hospitals that you will rotate through here; Presbyterian Hospital (for sure) and Shadyside (probably) do at least 27K/yr. I believe the year I interviewed the deparment was quoting 110,000 anesthetics/yr across the health system. Either way, great experience with great people in a great place.

Must have been >220 - I matched. 😉

... and I'm psyched about it.
