Hey guys,

I have a big assignment to hand in some time soon, and I'm having difficulty with properly understanding different forms of quantitative research for medical studies.

What I need to know is what sort of studies the following are (e.g. whether they're cohort studies, case series, case-control, etc.). It is very probable that there is a mixture here and not all of them are the same.

If you could reply with a list of the author(s) of each individual one along with what sort of study it is, i would be so grateful. I have attached the studies (there's 10 in total). One went over the file size for attachments, but it's:

.Wyllie E. (1998), Seizure outcome after epilepsy surgery in children and adolescents.
Source: Annals Of Neurology [Ann Neurol] 1998 Nov; Vol. 44 (5), pp. 740-8.

Thank you so much for the help. It's been tricky knowing exactly what each one is but I suspect most are case series. I would appreciate any help so much, because this has been difficult for me and I've spent many hours trying to properly understand.

You're asking a lot from people on an online message board, i don't know what you think this place is...It shouldn't be too difficult to look up on Wikipedia, then apply the concept to your articles

Is this a joke? If you've taken so much as an undergrad stats class you should be able to do this on your own

They are all numbers studies about the biological functions that get counted.
🙂

hope that helps

1) SDN isn't for homework help.

2) Check out Figure 1 from "An overview of clinical research: the lay of the land" David A Grimes, Kenneth F Schulz, The Lancet, Vol 359, January 5, 2002. It will walk you through how to think about the types of studies.

Yeah, I've spent a lot of time doing that. But the authors don't really comment on the designs of the studies properly, and neither does a lot of the literature that cites them. All they really say is whether they're retrospective studies or prospective studies or prospective controlled studies. I think the majority are case series, but it's difficult differentiating them because of the lack of information on their design.

I only resorted to coming on here after many hours of trying to figure it out. Since you guys are educated on this and I'm not, I thought I'd get some assistance. But heh.

Who would have thought medical students would be snobs?

I take back my previous comment. Thank you so much for that!
