i was looking at the jefferson medical college secondary about URM.......

just wondering what is the differencees between:

mexican american----

hispanic-----

mexican, chicano----

other hispanic---

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hispanic is someone from a spanish-speaking country. But chicano and Mexican American is more specific to Mexican ancestral roots.

one hundred percent correct. chicano is not used as much anymore, more of a cultural thing that we can save for another day. Dr. Eugenic, i prefer Mex-Amer. Its more accurate. Nothing to do with being PC by the way.

If you happen to be an URM, its a good thing you're applying to Jeff. They offered me 75% tuition I think because I am an URM-- everyone who received large (more than 50%) was an URM... good luck

Sorry to revive a dead thread but I'm intrigued by this statement.

My father was a migrant worker and part of the early supporters/organizers for Cesar Chavez's farm workers movement - Huelga, La Raza, Chicano Power and all the jazz.

So, I've always thought of myself as Chicana. I never thought of myself as Mexican American.

Why do people use mexican american and why has chicano/a fallen out of favor?
----------------------------

EDIT - never mind. In wikipedia it says that folks when Chicano became a word for 'politicized Mex/Americans from Tejano roots' those who were not political or tejano rejected it for themselves. Makes sense. Well my dad was political and Tejano so there you go... now I understand

I'm surprised a poster named dr. Eugenic made a thread about URMs and got serious replies.
