Urm??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Good question, I was wondering the same thing about myself. I am half Columbian and half Folgers. What does that make me?

I am considering myself an URM since both my parents were born in Mexico. I am first generation american. I beleive you two should also be considered URM just by the fact that both your parents are not from the states.

Is your first language english or some other language?

my first language is spanish...now spanglish...i was wondering cause amcas only seems to focus on mexian-americans, puerto ricans, african americans, and native americans...i think thats it...then theres an "other hispanic" option where you can put what country you're from. where btw, guatemala isnt even included!!!

Dude I am a freaking coffee! 😱 I can't even take the MCAT! How am I going to even apply for URM status with this being the case. I am soo screwed. I am never going to get into medical school. 🙁

According to the AAMC definition of URM, the only hispanics/latinos that are considered URMs are Mexican-Americans and mainland Puerto Ricans. I'm assuming that is because there are very large numbers of these particular groups in the US but proportionally very few are physicians. So it would seem that Guatemalan would not count as a URM strictly speaking but I think that being Hispanic in general is helpful for schools that take that into account.

that's what I suspected...

hey buddy, its Colombian, not Columbian.....unless of course you are from Missouri or South Carolina.

you can have two parents that are 100% guatamalan, have spanish as your first language, and still not be considered a URM? That's bizzare

Why can't you take the MCAT?

I agree.....this argument has been beaten to death, but regardless, you'll never be told by a school whether you are being considered an URM specifically. I am from Colombia and applied as disadvantaged etc etc..... some schools will do though is acknowledge your minority status by having their office of multicultural affairs (or whatever they are called) contact you, and maybe even interview with minority faculty as well. So to the OP, don't worry about whether you are URM or not.....announce your Guatemalan heritage and that fact that you are fluent in spanish and you'll be set.

You're upset that he mispelled Colombian, but you're okay that his other ancestry is coffee?

Why should I get upset about that??? As a Colombian, I can tell you that coffee practically runs through my veins.....what I should of called him out was the fact that he picked Folgers! eeeeech
