Hi,
I am looking for a program where i can get residency in Radiology upon completing PhD in Medical physics at UMichigan. As i am a foreign national, i would need visa sponsorship (H1/J1). Can you suggest how i shall go about finding the programs that would accept PhDs as medical residents.
Upon completion of residency for 2 yrs, i suppose ABR certification is the final step. Just wanted to make sure that i understand this right.

Thankyou 🙂

As far as I know, you need to go to med school.

Residency consists of a 1 year internship, followed by 4 years of rads residency...then an optional fellowship. I don't think you can do this without a MD or DO degree...

Sorry mate, but you need to goto med school (MD) to be a radiology resident. You can work as a nuclear physicist in the radiology department though.

This person is smart enough to do a PhD in Medical Physics so I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they already have their MD/MBBS from overseas. In fact their status states "MD/PhD" student...

My friend you would still be considered an FMG despite getting your PhD from a U.S. institution.

And radiology is not a 2 year but a 5 year (1 yr internship + 4 yrs Rads) residency.

Hi, Thanks for your replies.
I am pursuing PhD in Medical physics & donot have MD. I would like to pursue a postdoc training in-order to become Medical Physicist who work along with Physicians. Could you suggest any institutions that could train me with H1 sponsorship ? Do they have to be a CAMPEP accredited university as i heard that my place UMichigan is not one in Radiology ?

Thanks! Yodlee

If you want a Medical Physics residency that is Campep approved see here:
http://www.campep.org/campeplstres.asp

You might also find a non-Campep list, but you can also try going onto major teaching hospitals radiology or radonc (depending upon your preference) websites to see if physics residencies are offered.

Good luck.

BTW: this site is typically used by US Medical students, like myself, to share info and make each other more neurotic that we already are. I would like to avoid this site altogether, but I can't seem to stay away.

By UMichigan do you mean University of Michigan?
