US Grad with 2 attempts on Step 1 and Step 2 CK...need advice please

Hi all,

Im in kind of a ****ty situation as I just graduated from a US Allopathic Med School (MD) this June but didnt match into IM last year.

Things that screwed up me over: decelerated by 1 year (took 5 years to graduate), had 2 attempts on Step 1 (196/80) and 2 attempts on Step 2 CK (214/79). Passed CS 1st attempt. Basically, I went on 8 interviews for IM last year and couldn't match 🙁

This year, im thinking to apply to a mix of low tier FM and IM programs (over 100 apps). What should I do? Do ya'll think a match is possible for me? Ive talked about my failures in my personal statement, got solid letters, working on a Masters this year and trying to get involved in research. Am i doomed to never be a resident? Thanks for your input.

... Why did you fail step 1 and step 2 twice? Not trying to be a jerk, I really would like to figure that out - it's very rare for people from US allopathic schools to fail that much.

Also want to know

I can't imagine some malignant FM program with mostly fmgs in the middle of nowhere wouldn't take you, but I'd up my application to more like 200-300 programs.

So basically, I failed each exam once, not twice. It was close, 184/74, then passed after 6 weeks of studying. For step 1 I truly believe it was test anxiety. For Step 2, I really was trying to have too much on my plate, by doing a Sub-I, residency apps, and step 2 at the same time. In hindsight, it was a really dumb move that could have been avoided by pushing my date back a few weeks. But...Its a painful lesson I learned. Do you think I have a shot at at least FM this year? I would appreciate any advice since ERAS is going out soon.

Ugh. Yeah that's a hugely avoidable reason to do poorly on Step 2, as opposed to a family member's death or something. Typically schools use the MSPE to explain these kinds of things but that's going to be pretty tough to try and explain...

Either way I agree with the above - apply broadly to FM and pick at least 200 programs. It's gonna be an expense but it's better than not matching at all.
