Has anyone had an interview at USC? If so how was the format of the interview? Was there an essay at the beginning of the interview? Also what are the chances of being accepted if i have an interview next week. What exactly are they looking for in the group interview. Any help would be so grateful. thank you

I have not interviewed at USC, sorry.
Just wondering--when did you get this interview invite?
Also, how much longer does USC interview for?
I met a girl at one of my interviews who went to USC and she said it was a PBL type of interview---you're put with a group of students, given a problem, and asked to solve the problem as a group. I guess they want to see how you interact in a group setting...

hey beagle. i got the invite yesterday.

I had an interview at USC in October and was accepted on Dec. 2. The format of the day is really easy. We got there, recieved a packet with general materials (i.e. about the school, their program, status of my application...etc). They told us about the school and about PBL. We filled out some forms and then we did a brief essay on some topic, I don't remember exactly what it was but it was really easy to write. We then went on a tour of the dental school and sat in on a PBL class. Ideally the class is going over one of their case problems, but in our case they had already finished for the morning, and just talked to us about the school, the PBL program, etc. We then had a meeting with the financial aid guy. Then lunch with some current students (there were probably 2 or 3 students for 40 interviewers).

After lunch we had a mock PBL session with about 10 other students. There were 2 admissions people in the room and they observed how we worked in the group. The case we used is the same case they have used for several years. It doesn't really matter what the case is though because they are just seeing how you react to the situation. Honestly it was kind of frustrating because people were not really being themselves and were obviously trying to make themselves stand out-which made them look pretty stupid-if you ask me.

As far as chances after the interview-I don't really know. Somebody posted recently that they had been told that around half of the class was full. That leaves another 70 or so spots available. Everything I heard indicates that if you get an interview chances are you will also probably get accepted.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Congratulations Calident!!!
When did you apply to dental schools?

The essays are all different. Mine question was what was the last book I read and would I recommend it. Some other questions were what would you do if you won the lottery, what has been the most impressionable experience thus far in your life, what would you do besides dentistry...they give you 20-30minutes.

If you got an interview from USC, you're automatically on the waitlist. There is no rejection once you receive the interview, and they don't tell you your ranking because if someone interviewed later than you and is more qualified, they will be ahead of you. As far as the essay question goes, I interviewed on the 3/28 and my prompt was, "If you can spend 5 mins with President of US, what would you ask and why?", pretty basic, don't sweat too much about it.

ps-does anyone know where i can find official results from part I of national exam for all the dental schools?

how exactly do they rank individuals if there is only a group interview and no personal interview. is it completely based on letters of rec, personal statement, grades. after the interview they do not tell you that they will get back to you in a certain amount of time.

has anyone had an interview with usc and not been accepted. Also for those who have not yet been accepted, How do you think you may improve or prepare yourself better on the interview date. Also does everyone who interviewed at usc have above a 3.1 gpa.

Yo Calidenti,

You probably have a pretty good chance after the interview invite. Just show that you can function well in the PBL. Participate but don't be rude (ie don't cut people off). Volunteer to read the PBL scenario or be the scribe. If you don't agree with a person's statement be polite about it. The case you will get is non scientific so don't be concerned about your knowledge of biology chemistry... etc. It is very laid back... if you can converse well in a group you will be fine. Best of luck to you!
