  1. Pre-Dental
Hey y'all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with applying to USC from out of state residency. I haven't taken the DAT yet (2nd semester junior), but my cGPA is currently a 3.567 cGPA and my sGPA is 3.486 (including +/-'s...significantly higher without +/-'s). Anyways, I have had an upward trend in my GPA since freshman year and my major science grades include:
Bio 1 : B
Boi 2: B
Chem 1: A
Chem 2: A
O chem 1: B-
O chem 2: A-
Physics 1: A-

Of course I still have yet to take the DAT; but I was just wondering if I can achieve a legit score if y'all think I still have a chance for applying to USC. I've also been on a NCAA divison I team and have been involved in the pre-health honor society throughout college.

Thanks for everyone's help!

let me do a number crunch real quick............ uh....yeah give me a sec........................im coming up with 32.33, uh, repeating of course, percentage of acceptance.

Assuming you are talking about University of Southern California and not South Carolina, being out of state shouldn't affect you since it is a private school, so your chances mostly depend on your DAT score and the rest of your application. I don't know why everyone else is being so harsh on you, but I'd say you have a decent shot if you get a decent score and have decent LOR and ECs. Good luck!

Sorry for the confusion! I'm talking about University of Southern California 🙂

Thanks!

Hey, your GPA looks exactly like mines and my DAT was just the average score most people get being around the low 20's. I just got an interview from them so do not give up hope. Also, USC does not care weather you are OOS or in state because it is a private school. Just keep up with your extracurricular activities, do community service, do some pre-Dental related stuff like shadowing a Dentist, attending workshops/conferences some local Dental Schools might have. For instance, I live in California, specifically the Bay Area and here we have two Dental Schools in San Francisco. UCSF has an annual Impression conference where pre-Dental students can attend and learn about admissions and take a tour of the school. You also get a chance to do mock interviews and talk to current Dental students. Now the other school, UoP has a great program for pre-Dental students. I was able to attend a two day simulation course where around 60 pre-Dental students get to be Dental students for two days. You learn how to do an amalgam and composite restoration and preparation which is a great thing to put on your application under Dental experience. Once you learn this, the next day you actually get to work on typodonts and use the instruments Dentist use to put what you learned the previous day to the test. Of course you are not a professional yet, but having the experience and knowledge of that really helps on your application. I would encourage you to try and look for some opportunities some Dental schools in your state might offer for pre-Dental students. As for the DAT, do take your time to prepare for it and do not just shoot for an average score. Try your best on it and if you score higher than the average, the chances of you getting in will be even higher. Good luck with everything!

Thanks for the detailed response Carlos Ortega!

Don't let these other people discourage you. One of my friend who have a 3.6 GPA and a 18 DAT is now currently a D1 at USC... and that's not the punch line.... She didn't turn in her AADSAS application until JANUARY. Anyway, she had a strong extracurricular resume and did lots of dental related stuff. My advice to you is to kill the DAT, apply early and to a lot of schools, please don't put your eggs in one basket.

Online it says the average GPA is 3.5 and sGPA is 3.4...so i'm a little above in both of those areas. The average DAT was a 20, and I just started tutoring twice a week for the DAT. I'm pretty sure I'm going to take it in the end of may!

Oh and I don't know how much they take into the gpa without +/-'s but mine is a 3.64

Base on what you've provided thus far, I think the chances are looking pretty good for you. Just do well on your DAT and apply early. Once you're invited for interview it becomes 50%. GL.
