Check your mail everyone! I just received an interview invite via e-mail a couple minutes ago and scheduled a date. They have five options, all coming up soon and squeezed in before December 1st! Woohoo... I'm gunna check me out some PBL!!!

Who else is going to be there on the 28th??

GL Everybody!

congrats!!!

No love from usc here 😕

I'm heading down on the 14th. Logistics are kind of a pain. Its not like the East Coast schools where I could just take a cab. Anyone who lives in area have any advice?

Edit: for the poster below, stats are 21/21/18 science gpa 3.6.

What Is Everyone's Stats? I Just Want To Know, So That I Could Gauge Myself... Thanks...

The school cares nothing about who you actually are. Don't go to the interview expecting much.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to spend money to interview there. They should do everything over the internet and phone conferencing for their PBL game.

So what you're saying is that you weren't all that impressed? I'm debating whether I should respond...

evidently everyone has mixed feelings about 'sc...either you love it or hate it. personally, i wouldn't let one person's opinion keep you from experiencing it for yourself though...who knows you may just end up being one of those who falls in love with usc

what is the deal w/ this PBL thing anyway...can someone explain this to me? i see a lot of people complaining about it and i'm pretty lost on the whole thing

Problem based learning=pbl. Basically, instead of traditional lectures, you work in groups of 8 people to work on different case problems. for example, a patient has a heart attack on your clinic chair...why and how? This answer will not be taught to you, instead you'l have to do independent research and discuss it with your group later on. this is how you will learn everything at USC. Instead of lecturers or faculty members, you'l have facilitators that will guide you through the material. Although USC is 100% PBL, they do have info sessions, which is the lecture counterpart of lectures (A review once every 2 weeks or so). Although, PBL is a different approach to learning dentistry, USC does well on the NBDE 1 and has a decent specialization rate. Also, the facilities are sweet. I think my only deter would be the price tag. If you get an interview, you should check out the school. gl.

Is there a follow up session where an instructor confirms if the groups resolution was correct or not? The above is pretty much what I end up doing anyway, gettin together with friends to study the lecture slides. But it seems neccessary to have an authority to say, "yes" or "no" to the resolution, otherwise it is just conjecture.

Can anyone who has already interviewed at USC give an example of what you discussed in groups?? Even if it's hypothetical and not something you actually discussed... I don't really "get" what they expect us to do. I have plenty of shadowing hours but I'm still not confident that I'll be able to rationalize a case study in any extraordinary capacity.

yellow snow - no, the facilitator really isnt officially allowed to tell you whether or not you are on the right path, although many of them do guide you along the process because they are originally lecturers. The point of the PBL case is not to find a diagnosis though, so one cannot get stuck in the mindset of "i need to find out exactly what disease this guy has." The point is to learn about the symptoms and what is going wrong in the body that is causing these symptoms.

IceSpice - During the interview, you mostly sit through lectures from USC staff, you sit around with students who already attend USC, and you participate in a mock pbl case. The case they give interviewees is really simple, usually has nothing to do with dentistry (it could have to do with plumbing!), again - the point is not to figure out what the diagnosis is, rather to come up with broad ideas as to why there is a problem, and figure out what are called "Learning Needs," or what you need to go research in order to understand the problem better.

Hope this helps!
Good luck to you guys!

I got one also. I will be in Loma Linda on the 7th and I wish I could schedule it some time then when I will be near LA. Oh well, just happy I got the invite. What does everyone know about USC? I know that it has great tradition and I am excited to see the area. Go TROJANS!!! I might want to catch a football game while I am there also.

Just got back from my interview at NYU and found a E-mail from USC for a interview. Now I just need to schedule it. Too bad I found out on a Saturday. Guess i'll have to wait until monday.
