During my interview at USC I think I have never been soooooo annoyed by a person. This girl kept saying,"Ohhh my god! Don't you just love USC. It is the best place in th world to go. I couldn't imagine ever living outside of LA!" so on and so on. It was too LA for me. I realized why I could not go to school there. I just could never feel that the city I live in is the center of the world...especially one as crummy as LA.
We took a tour and they brought us to this big window to view the city, the whole while talking about the great weather in LA. There was so much smog I could not see, but a few of the buildings.
Having thoroughly pointed out how much I hate this school, I am curious if anyone has recieved an acceptance from them yet. While I wont go there, I kind of want to be asked so I can say no.

Anyone else get the same feeling?

Yeah, that place sucked. It was definetly not the place for me. That girl you're talking about....sounds like one of my classmates. I want to punch her she's so annoying...she can go to USC for all I care.

I haven't received anything from them, I have essentially pulled my application from them though.

I got an acceptance letter from USC, but I am turning it down to go to Temple. I didn't care for how expensive the program was. And the full PBL turned me off, I think PBL is a good thing, but 100% PBL is not, if it was like 50/50 then I would consider it more. I also didn't like how they said getting patients isn't a problem, but getting the right patients is.

do you remember how much tuition will be at templ next year, i forgot

Ya, I am with ya. SF is far superior!!!!! I got in on the first, got my packet last Saturday, and today got a Christmas card! How sweet! Still not going though......

Oh U$C sux overall. I got an acceptance offer from the dental program two weeks ago.

Number one, I have attended USC for just my freshmen year before transferring out to UC Berkeley. I couldn't stand the frat and "materialistic" rich-boy lifestyle of the majority of the trojan students. And yes, I have constantly heard that "oh I can't imagine living anywhere else than LA" garbage while hanging out with SC or LA people. They have no reality what's outside the hollyweird bubble. The smog is horrible, the traffic in LA is the worst, gang violence, red-tape beauracracy, people with an attitude problem, segregated city, drive 10+ miles to get to work, you name it. LA sucks!

The only dental school in SoCal I'd consider attending is LLU. However, their religious philosophy is just too much for me. But the Diamond Bar/Loma Linda side of LA is more peaceful and laidback than the USC area.

you guys are hating on LA just because you don't like USC? berkeley has some pretty ****ty areas too and if i'm not mistaken, aren't oakland and SF segregated? so segregated, that the bay bridge is the only thing that connects the two cities.

You could not pay me enough to go to USC dental. Actually...ok, may be in the hundreds of millions I may CONISDER going there...but even then I'd have my doubts...

Denitsts (plural = many) do not hire SC grads for they and I quote "DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING"
One former SC professor no longer hires SC grads for his private practice due to many experiences one of his most recent: ...4 mos. after hiring sc grad..the sc grad left ...patients that came back...the professor ended up redoing every single crown and other such work..and hence he does not hire SC grads anymore.
SC has a HORRIBLE REPUTATION IN LA...just like UNLV in las vegas for there cheating scandal (fraud scandal where 15% of graduating class committed fraud to graduate and only reprimand was community service...hence ..they are the laughing stock of citizens there and constant butt of jokes in newspapers or at least was very much so over the summer)..anyways..my point was USC SUCKS! Best of luck =)

dude, i never said usc was good. i was just saying that it is no reason to hate LA.

USC does not have a horrible reputation in LA.

Crap. I'm screwed. UCLA is a complete stretch for me so I was sorta banking on USC (only so I can stay in the LA area- not b/c I like LA, but b/c fiance has an awesome high paying job on a TV show, so we can't move). Is USC really that bad??? Can you guys elaborate some more please? I don't want to go there if I'm going to come out knowing nothing. Thanks!

Have you or will you be interviewing there? You will answer your own questions just by visiting. Come with questions to ask the students. It's funny how they don't even try and cover up the crappyness of the place.

However, if the fiance won't move...I guess USC would be ok. Expect to do a GPR though. Or just build up stats and go to UCLA.

What does PBL mean?

No interview yet. I guess that could end up being a good thing🙂

It's not that he won't move, it's just that this is his perfect dream job (he's a writer for a very popular show on HBO Sunday nights) and I wouldn't want him to give that up.

I sarted this thread off with a rant about how I hate USC. I do not know anything about the quality of students they produce. My problem, why I could never attend a school like it, is the day to day mentality on campus.

When I was in Philly, Marquette, OHSU, etc. I talked about my traveling abroad and the general response was something like "That sounds like fun...What are the people like there?...Its good to learn from different cultures."
Every expereince I have had with/at USC (and there have been others outside of my interview for d-school) end up going like "yeah, but what do you think of LA? If you ever have been to LA you would see there is no reason to go to these places."

I hate this mentality because it is completely untrue. LA sucks!

Yea, you gotta hate Southern California the weather sucks, there is nothing to do, and who likes the beach anyways???

I like the idea of SoCal.
1)The weather is great, its the smog that sucks. I don’t think the inhabitants know how really murky their skies are. They have continuous overcast.
2)There are about a million things to do....unfortunately everyone involves sitting in a car for an hour. The inhabitants don’t even know what it is like to walk places (work, store, bar)...unless it is from their car.
3)The beaches are crap. Between trying to find a spot to sit, arrogant surfers, and the tons of trash on the beach, the best way to visit is from the inside of your car (see problem #2).

That is another comment I get from Californians..."The beaches are the best” Have you been to other beaches? Can you list 5 beaches, other than California, that you have been to? I am guessing not because you think California is the best (see initial problem).

Dude, chill, it's true that USC dental school has a sh_tty reputation. I even met USC dental residents at a local dental clinic in my town who tell me that the professors at USC's dental school are cold, rude, play favoritism and if they were given a chance to go back in time, they would have chosen another dental school. I can attest to their statement as I've attended USC for ONLY my freshmen year and transferred out of that rich-boy frat school in watts. I was a film major while attending SC. The guys in my dorms were horrible. They puked on the floor, and I've never encountered such crassless immature kids in my entire life!

I also shadowed this pedodontist who did his specialty program at USC, but went to LLU for dental school. He said that USC has a "different" culture from LLU's dental program. He told me straight up that USC's instructors are mean, cold, and one of them he'll never forget, crushed his wax-up deliberately.

I also went to USC's interview this past November, and thought it was such a joke to just "speak up" for that PBL mock interview. I even got admitted to the program, but quickly declined the acceptance.

LA is horrible too. Traffic, smog, arrogant people, crimes, gang shooting, you name it, it's the truth.

Yeah, Berkeley is too liberal for me, but at least the students there are there for their academics, not to binge drink and use mommy and daddy's money to pay their way into a fraternity. yes, oakland and richmond near Berzerkly are dangerous areas, and I wouldn't linger there at night.

But I had better memories of hanging around with my fellow students at Berkeley than with the "kids" at USC. 😀

i grew up in southern cali and i love it. why are there only like 3 schools there 🙁

honestly guys, LA isn't as bad as you make it out to be. true its no tropical rainforest, there is a bit of smog, yada yada. but trust me...its a lot more enjoyable than you make it out to be.

and you can't claim i'm biased...i don't even LIVE in la, i commute back and forth from this small secluded "clean air" community much like the ones you liken to every place that ISN'T la.

and yea, those of us in LA love it, of course we're going to talk about it and how much WE enjoy it. i wasn't aware we no longer had the right to do that...huh, go figure...

also, don't generalize USC as being representative of ALL of LA...i mean come on, have you seen UCLA? its in freakin' westwood, there are no gangs, shootings, drug dealers, etc... even the people are not as arrogant as you'd find in other places, because they are too busy enjoying the sunny SOCAL weather.

don't hate!

Where is the OP from anyways Cleveland? Columbus?? Give me a break man, Who wouldn't choose to live in So. Cal over those cold old places. Besides some smog LA>>>>where ever you're from!!!

lol I AGREE.

LA s my hometown.. and this place really sucks

if you are talking about westwood, hollywood , santa monica or other surrouding areas/satelite cities, you might be wrong, they are all cool, even though they are a little expensive to live in...

Personally , LA city itself is really bad.. traffic...crime.. smog.. you name it. it has got all the negative features that a city can possibly have.

Well. about driving in the city... you need to fight all those reckless drivers who don't speak English and not covered by insurance... this whole city is insane. it is filled with almost-uncivilized or uneducated people who dont have common sense.

my family own businesses in the city and we have to be nearby.. but if I can, I really would get outta here ASAP.

SC has a HORRIBLE REPUTATION IN LA

Actually the speciality programs accept a lot of their own students, there are more SC students that match and are in speciality programs at SC than from other schools. For example...out of 5 spots for ortho (match criteria based on GRE score, NBDE Part 1s, GPA, extracurricular), 3 are from SC.

USC actually has a very high pass rate on the boards (NDBE I/II,CA, WREB). Sent out from the Dean a few months back in an email.....

*At the time of the July 2006 National Board Part I written exam, there were 144 students enrolled in the Class of 2008.
*123 students took the examination. Ninety-nine (99%) of the 123 students passed the examination on first attempt. 1 student had a partial failure (this means that only the failed section must be repeated).
*21 students have not yet taken the board.
*The Class of 2008's average score is 88.4.
*The National Board report indicating our placement in the country and our quintile rank for this year is expected in February 2007.

But the school does have its flaws, its super expensive, PBL works for some, for others its not so great. The school is currently trying to change things though. USC also has more clinical requirements than most schools hence why many arent able to graduate on time therefore unable to take the boards and are rather bitter over that.

SC however doesnt have a bad reputation in LA, yah standards arent the same as they used to be with PBL but SC still does quite well clinically with its amazing faculty, Pascal Magne (world famous prosth)and his brother Michael Magne, Dr. Stanley Malamed (who wrote the book on dental local anesthesia which 99% of all dental schools use), Anna Pattison (who wrote the book on non-surgical perio which also 99% of schools use to teach perio), and the list goes on.

However remember that all schools have their problems, its all up to you to determine where you'd fit in best.

Hey hey hey... don't hate on Berkeley. But seriously, hahaha... our apartment building has been broken into twice this past semester. My roommate was mugged by a 12 year old boy (she won and nothing was taken).

Despite the occasional yuckiness, the area is definitely culturally awesome. And yes, Oakland and SF are segregated... and I'm sure I can find a way around the Bay Bridge.

As for USC, my aunt went to hygiene school there... I don't know if it's just cuz I originally come from a ghetto neighborhood, but the area is fine. I wasn't afraid of getting attacked or anything like that. The school is beautiful (not as great as Berkeley but great nonetheless).
