I hear USC is going to lose their accreditation. I find it interesting that the most expensive dental school in the country is on the decline. I mean if your going to pay that much money for school I would hope that your paying for a quality education not just PBL that is not working. I know that Harvard integrates PBL but its not being done their to strictly make money off their students. Harvard actually has a deep rooted emphasis on research and PBL suits that type of student they accept. Seems to me like USC dental school is just trying to maximize their profit off their dental students. This makes me sick. On the other hand, for some reason people in SoCal (especially the Valley) still seem to think that if you are a dentist from USC your top notch. So if you do go to USC you can bank on the reputation that previous (baby-boomer) USC dentists have built for you. 👍

@smutanpaysmybill, ur a ******. Everything u said is incorrect, considering its 2 am u probably got home from hollywood or something a little tipsy and disgruntled since ur probably unhappy with your first year there. By the way it is not the most expensive dental school and no they are not going to loose accreditation and PBL may not be working for you but it may be working for others. U knew what u signed up for stop crying about it.

@machiavelliansm, one thing USC has over UCLA for sure are the girls. 🙂

wow. wow. wow.!!! No name calling there buddy. lol. I don't even attend USC. I am just stating what I have heard. With all do respect UCSD6, I am not sure what you mean by USC has girls over UCLA. I can assure you this is a false statement. There are plenty of females at UCLA. Now if you want to reword that statement and state that USC has plenty more Persian women than UCLA I will not argue with that. Anyhow, your opinion is your opinion and that is what makes you a very special person (I am sure your mother has told you this plenty to make you feel normal). So congrats on you being a USC student, and I hope that you reach all of your goals.

P.s. I have posted a link for you that may help you with your loan repayments.

yea sorry for calling u a ******. I know you go to the dental school cause u have tmi. Yea we got a lot of persians, but the undergrads are definitely better looking than UCLA's 🙂 Go to sleep already. PS haha I like the loan repayment statement, but luckily my family is picking up the tab. I have rich parents.

Hey OP, how do you know that they're going lose their accreditation? You have to at least tell us where you're getting this information.

Just another waitlisted individual spreading disinformation.

Every dental school in the country undergoes periodic evaluations in order to ensure that they are up to standards. USC School of Dentistry has been around for 113 years, producing some of the best clinicians in the nation. How do I know this, experience. I spent over 9 years in the US Navy as a dental technician and have had first-hand experience with dentists from roughly 30 to 40 dental schools. USC trained dentists have always produced exceptional results. Furthermore, during my time in the military I have had the opportunity to build friendships with several Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) directors who have witnessed the clinical skill level of dentists graduating from institutions across the country. Prior to formulating my decision, I contacted the AEGD directors from Yokosuka, Japan and San Diego. Each of these clinics has over 100 practicing dentists that rotate every 2 to 3 years. Needless to say, they have evaluated the work of hundreds of providers. Both of these dentists (neither of which graduated from USC) stated that USC trained dentists consistently remain at the top in terms of clinical ability. In addition, they each stated that USC is very costly but that the training and strength of the alumni is well worth the cost.

Lets dissect this one.
Ok first off USC was just re-accredited so you are completely non-credible as can be seen on the ADA website:

"Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC
925 W. 34th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90089-6041
Dean: Dr. Avishai Sadan
Phone: (213) 740-3124
Accreditation Status: Approval without Reporting Requirements
Last Accreditation Visit: 2008
Next Accreditation Visit: 2015

Second PBL isn't a very cheap system to run, every group of 8 students needs a facilitator and the vast majority of these facilitators are PhDs and Dentists so you have the cost of a professor for every 8 students instead of the whole class in one lecture hall.

Third PBL's effectiveness is directly correlated with the amount of time you put into it. 50% of the things taught in a lecture in medicine will be proven irrelevant or wrong within 10 years so this teaches you how to learn on your own efficiently.

Fourth you only have to look at the work our seniors do to know that USC makes you a damn good clinician.

To be honest with everyone, I have heard that USC may lose their accreditation from multiple sources and the majority of them have been dentists. I will not release their names for privacy reasons but I will say that 3 out of the 8 dentists I have talked to were USC grads and 1 of them did their specialty at SC but I believe that was back in the late 80s early 90s. I did not post this statement about USC to cause problems I just wanted to get insight on the issue and see if anyone has heard similar stories. All 8 dentist I talked to practice in California and and 2 of them are actually professors (at separate schools). I figured there may be some truth to this statement due to the fact that none of these dentist know each other and come from different backgrounds. I know that I cant base fact on assumptions of others especially with a small sample size so I figured I'd bring the topic to everyones attention and observe what responses everyone has. Trust me I was shocked when I first heard about this but after hearing it multiple times I started to listen. So long story short I am sorry if I offended anyone for presenting the topic. My opinion on USC is they are overpriced and I with all do respect I personally do not think the majority of dental students are mentally geared to adapt to a complete PBL program (I cant speak for everyone UCSD6). I personally did a lot of PBL as an undergrad. (and if you really did true research PBL is all you really do if you think about it). I hated PBL at first but then came to love it. I just know that not everyone is like me and feel bad for the students at USC that hate it. They are there b/c I know a lot of students that go there.

p.s. UCSD6, good to know you have rich parents, Problem is not everyone else does.

Ok thanks.

USC is not going to lose their accreditation! As the evidence in the thread shows, we went though the accreditation the year I got here and won't be up again until 2015, the standard 7 years that all schools get.

You can chalk this up as another USC rumor thread. I've been busy checking out the dental/residency/and NBDE forums, and its disappointing that this is still going on over here. If anything, USC has just started on its way to some great things thanks to some new leadership and funds to see these through.

I hear when you first sign up on sdn you have to make a thread about usc losing their accreditation. Go easy on smutanpaysmybil, he's just following the rules.

I am currently a 1st year dental student at USC and I truly do not understand why USC gets all this hate here on SDN. I promise you guys all these negative posts are far from reality. Losing its accreditation huh?get a life guys and stop spreading rumors. USC was the first dental school in the west and will NEVER lose it's accreditation. Hell yeah USC dentists have the best reputation in So Cal, that is why I chose to come here!!!

Here is my honest opinion about USC:

Clinical: It truly is EXCELLENT clinically. I have friends that attend different dental schools and we are always updating each other about what we are doing. As a first year, I have definitely worked a lot more on my manual dexterity and working with the hand piece than my friends at other schools. We were working with the hand piece on the first day of school, and started working on the maxillary quadrants (with a mirror) a few days later. Our professors so far have been outstanding, and the faculty and TAs have been extremely helpful and approachable. Most (if not all) of my class says that our amalgam professor was the most passionate and dedicated professor we have ever had. As far as all the rumors about not having enough patients go, they are simply not true. USC is in downtown, there are more than enough patients. From the recent graduating class only one student did not graduate on time, and it was because of a personal matter. Keep in mind there is 144 of us in each class!! According to a survey from the academic affairs office 98% of the graduating students said during there last year that they would recommend USC to their close relatives/friends that are pursuing dentistry. If all the negative rumors on SDN were true, that percentage would be drastically lower.

PBL: Although it is not for everyone, PBL is the best learning method for me. All our cases are real medical cases that are extremely interesting and stimulating. I have had about 8 cases so far and I truly have learned a whole lot about the basic medical sciences from those cases. PBL is actually one of the main reasons why I picked SC and it has been a great experience. Being in lectures all day just sounds so boring and torturous to me. The PBL pedagogy keeps us engaged in the case and makes remembering things so much easier (for me). The only problem I see with PBL is that it is extremely time consuming (we have to do a lot of research on our own to decipher the case and understand what is going on) and is just not for everyone. If you feel that you need lectures to feed you all the information, and do not like the challenge of dissecting a medical case to understand all the aspects of it, pbl is just not for you. USC, for the most part, has been pretty good with accepting the right people for PBL. A lot of people in my class have their MS degrees, we even have an MD in our class. It would be perfect if USC moves towards a hybrid between both PBL and traditional lectures. I think that that would be the ideal teaching method for everyone.

I really do not understand where all the hate is coming from. My time at USC has been amazing so far, and although there are a couple of complainers (like at every other school) everyone in my class seems to be really enjoying their dental journey so far. All of us on here are pursuing one of the very best professions out there, and no matter what school we go to we are working extremely hard to accomplish our goals. It is really pointless and very immature on sit behind our computers and bash on each other.

My advice to all the predents, is that do your research, and talk to students at the schools that your interested in. Do not believe everything that you read on SDN. Although a lot of the people on here are really helpful and are genuinely here to help, there are some that spread rumors for no reason. I apologize about this really long post, but I just felt terrible reading all the bad things that people are saying about my school, especially since most of it is just false. I really hope this was helpful and I am sorry if I bored you to death guys!!!

Hi! I am admitted to USC this year. Can you please tell me how do D3's get their patients and is it tough to find them or are enough available considering the school has 144 students and there are other dental schools in LA. I've heard that at UIC, there are so many patients that a patient sometimes has to wait for a year to find a spot in the clinic.

Another question is are students you graduate able to find a decent paying job and how do they manage 400K debt? Thanks.

FutureDentist, I'm glad that you like it here too, but I have no idea why you would resurrect a rumor thread that makes the school look horrible and not to mention a thread that I smashed into oblivion a year ago to make your point about how great USC is? 😕
