I am a junior in college and I am pursuing a degree in Psychology. I eventually plan to become a Nurse Practitioner or a Physician Assistant. I picked psychology because I'm not entirely sure of my future goals and I felt that psychology is both very interesting and very useful to a career in health care.

However, I would still like to gear my degree in psychology towards being as useful as possible towards a future career in health care.

I've already decided to take life span development and developmental courses in children and adolescence, a course in health psychology, and a few classes in neuropsychology.

Does anyone have any other ideas on courses that may be useful towards a career in health care?

Thanks 🙂

Psychopathology and Abnormal Psychology. These will aid in learning diagnositic skills within psychology and outside of psychology. Good luck.

I found three courses offered to undergraduates that seem to meet the descriptions. Do you recommend taking all three?

(1) Abnormal Psychology: "Examination of current theories and empirical findings regarding the major forms of psychopathology."

(2) Advanced Behavioral Neoruscience: "Advanced discussion of contemporary issues in psychobiology, including: synaptic pharmacology, drugs, and behavior, neurodegenerative diseases and the biological bases of psychopathology."

(3) Development and Psychopathology: "Examines theories and research on psychopathology (e.g., autism) during infancy, childhood, and adolescence from a developmental-contextual perspective; emphasis on description, prevalence, etiology, prognosis, and assessment."

Thank you 🙂

All three of those sound like great courses for a future health care practitioner. I'd recommend taking them all if you can fit them into your schedule.

All three of those sound good to me. Good luck with them.

I would recommend taking all three. I did, it is great.

Take, if offered, courses dealing with motivating people, and any seminar courses that allow you go to into the field and work in hospitals or working with persons with disabilities- really helps you if you want to go into nursing or physicianship later on.
