I am deciding between USF Morsani vs New York Medical College. I am not 100% sure about a future specially but am interested in surgery. I am mainly concerned with research/clinical opportunities and match outcomes.
New York Medical College (80K scholarship)
University of South Florida
New York Medical College (80K scholarship)
- Strong match results, especially this year.
- Not quite sure how they are matching so well, would love to hear an explanation for how they "punch above their weight"
- 80K scholarship makes CoA about 80k cheaper than USF OOS CoA
- Liked students at second look more than USF - seemed more down to earth
- Match mostly in NY/Northeast
- 1.5 year preclinical provides more time for research, rotations
- On campus housing - convenient and cheap
- P/F preclinical
- Closer to home
- Lower ranked than USF
- Don't care about prestige for prestige's sake but would hate to be limited by reputation/resources of the school I attended
- Fewer research opportunities than USF
- Step 1 pass rates falling since 2022 ( 99 -> 96 -> 91 -> 90 in 2024!)
- Acknowledge Step scores have been falling nationally since it went P/F. However, falling scores also coincide with new preclinical curriculum. Admin seemed aware this is a problem at second look and have implemented changes.
- Have a home hospital, but unlikely can do all rotations at Westchester MC. May have to get housing away from campus if I rotate through NYC hospitals
University of South Florida
- Tier 1 research University & Fastest rising medical school according to US News.
- Admin is very proud of this but I can't tell if they are getting high on their own supply or if this will actually lead to better matches/results for students
- Strong support of student research and offers many research opportunities
- Beautiful new school buildings
- Strong clinical Sites including Tampa General and Moffitt Cancer Center
- Palm trees, beaches, Tampa is nice
- Anatomy lab doesn't involve dissection, all cadavers are prosected by TAs
- Students at second look said this was helpful because it saved them time.
- Clinical sites located near school, wouldn't have to move for rotations
- High Step Scores
- Have not released financial aid packages.
- Right now I am assuming about 80K more than NYMC
- Primarily match in FL - believe school has good reputation in FL but not around the country.
- Unsure if I want to remain in FL after school
- Despite strong research and clinical sites, match results aren't as strong as NYMC. Ex. fewer matching into completive specialties like plastics, NuSu, Urology, Integrated CT, ENT, etc
- Not entirely sure how to explain this, would love to hear if anyone can explain USF's delta between USFs ranking, research, and match results
- Weird politics in FL
- 2 year graded preclinical = Less time for rotations/research prior to applying for residency.
- Every single students I talked to at second look said this wasn't an issue. Felt provided motivation to study and prepared them well for step 1.
- However, everything I have read online says that 1.5 year is better...
