mr. larkin called to tell me that i'm now in the top 5 for waitlist movement! of course movement could stop and this thread would be irrelevant, but it's good news for anyone waiting, because back in may i was in the 50-80 range on the list. anyway, he thinks i have a good chance of getting in over the next few weeks, so what do you all think?

i liked usf a lot, and it's less than half the price of wake forest, and it's only an hour and a half away from my family. but i loved wake forest and winston-salem, and it's better known than usf. i'm hoping to do my residency in california, texas, or somewhere in new england, and i'm going to have to have everything going for me b/c i'll be a year behind my boyfriend and so will be trying to place near wherever he gets his residency. where would you all go? i guess i'm basically asking if anyone can think of reasons i shouldn't go to either school, since i know the pros and i liked them both. and any opinions on winston-salem or tampa?

oh, for those of you who don't know who mr. larkin is, i've already been accepted to wake forest, and will likely get into usf.

It seems you like Wake Forest better, so I think you should go there. If it were me, I'd probably choose USF to be close to family and save money, but it sounds like your priorities are different. If you're looking to be in a specific area or specialize, the name of Wake Forest will probably help. On the other hand, it mostly depends on how you perform in med school.

Good luck in your choice and congrats! 😀

well, i liked wake forest better, but being near my family is also very important to me. i'm not as concerned with the cost, i guess. does anyone know anything about how wake students do on boards and matching? i've heard some negative rumors, but nothing substantiated. also, what were other people's impressions on the schools?? i figure i only spent a few hours at each, so i'm sure there were both good and bad things i didn't see. i'd like to call mr. larkin back with a definite answer, either to improve my chances or to save him the trouble of calling and help out usf's stats. please help!!!

If I wanted to place into a good residency program, I will go to Wake Forest because of its reputation.

i was in your exact same situation last year except I got into USF first and then got in at Wake off the wait list. i grew up in FLA and my family is there, but I really just got a better vibe from Wake and thought I'd be happier there, so here I am and I honestly love the school. I don't know if I'd worry so much about matching and board scores and all that, b/c the truth of the matter is that if you are super gunner and do very well, it won't matter as much where you went to school. If you bomb and just skate by, then also it won't matter where you go. I will tell you that we had some board problems last year and the administration has worked very hard to try to rectify the situation. I think though it is more of a problem if you don't think you'll end up doing well on the boards to begin with, since we really don't teach TO the boards as much as some places might. I'd be happy to talk to you more about it if you want.

To echo what everyone else is saying, it really depends all on you. I would attend where I felt I would be the happiest. I can tell you that everyone here at USF loves it and whatever problems we might encounter, the office of student affairs is always there for us. If you work your behind off, you will not fail the boards or any of your classes. Our pass rate has been at or near 100% over the past couple of years. Our students do place well in residencies all around the country. I have the match lists from the last three years if that will help you in making your decision. I cannot say it is better than wake forest since I do not know anything about WF and I have never heard anything bad about them. All I can say is that I really do believe that you would not regret attending USF and am sure that if you work hard, you can get any residency you desire. If you have any specific questions, let me know?

wow, thanks, i may take you both up on your offers of more advice later. i talked to mr. larkin today to tell him that i would choose usf over wake (my family and the cost were winning, just barely), and he said i'm #3 and he felt like he'd be giving me a call next week. BUT i've been living in indiana for about 6 months now, and recently switched my license, registration, etc. over to IN, so my FL residency might be jeopardized. 🙁 but i'm not an indiana resident by IU's standards yet, so don't i have to be a FL resident? grrrrr... so anyway, if i don't get florida tuition i might go with wake, but i guess i'll just have to wait and see. mr. larkin's gonna talk to some people to find out about my situation. this sucks. but maybe i'll get into IU next week and it won't matter. in the meantime, if anyone has anything to add that'd be great. thanks again!!!
