I had applied to several mph programs because I assumed I would not be able to gain sufficient experiences hours to be competitive for this cycle. However, shortly after applying to the mph programs I did obtain a position at a clinic and will be applying this cycle. So today I got my acceptance letter from the local mph program I applied to.

I was in the process of applying as a non degree seeking student to this same university because I need to take some pre-reqs for vet school. I was wondering if I could just use my entry into this school via mph and take the vet school pre-reqs. I would be taking microbio and biochemistry. I thought maybe I should apply to this school as a non degree student but I can register for classes much earler through mph then with non degree status.

I was also wondering if the school would drop me from these courses as they are undergraduate classes and have nothing really to do with the mph program.

Thanks!

As far as I've heard, it's very much frowned upon for students in a master's program (and I would be surprised if mph didn't count) to leave for vet school without finishing.

If you're sure you want to apply to vet school this year and have no intentions of finishing your MPH, just decline it and go in as a non-degree seeking student or a second bachelors seeking student. accepting the MPH position might allow you to sign up for classes faster, but i don't think that's worth the ethical dilemma to follow with adcoms, and you'd also be taking a spot in an MPH program from someone else who is genuinely interested in the program.

I am not sure if I should apply as a non degree seeking student or apply for a second bachelors in another field. Is there any particular field you recommend me applying to that is easy to get into? I will be trying to apply asap for the fall so I want to apply to a program that is easier to get into.

Does anyone know how to apply for a second bachelors? I am obviously not a freshman but I dont want to apply either as a non degree or post bacc student as they are not considered degree seeking and not given proritity.

Thanks!

PM TwelveTigers. I believe she's doing exactly that (the whole secondary bachelors bit) in Micro.

I did a second bachelors as well which is where I picked up the bulk of my prerequisites.

I actually ended up finishing it though.

I think david594 enrolled as a 2nd bachelors student and didn't actually complete the degree so you could PM him as well.

Some places will give you priority as a post-bacc because they have specific courses (usually at night) that are only for post-bacc students. If you have a program like that at your school you might want to look into it--I'm in a post-bacc at a pretty large university and I have never had a problem getting into a course--passing them is a different story:laugh:

Thanks for the replies.

I just emailed the school and told them that I declined the mph acceptance offer and then applied for a second bachelors. My question is what major I should choose? I chose to aply as undecided but am not sure if I should contact them to change it. I have to take micro and biochem. I thought being undecided there would be a much smaller chance of not getting in but am not sure if there are any disadvantages being undecided.

Thanks!

Bio or animal science would probably be your best bets. They are fairly relevant and if you have to answer the question "Why" they will understand when you say you are doing it in preparation for applying to professional school.

I would ask the school how they handle second bac applications. I emailed Umass first before applying and they told me that the individual departments make their own admissions decisions and told me the individual in the animal science department responsible for that. From there I scheduled a time to sit down and talk to him about my plans and no surprise but I wasn't the first the do a second bac just to finish up pre-reqs.

I got in, had priority enrollment for all the classes I needed, got accepted to vet school and dropped out of the second bachelors since there was no way I could complete it in the semester I had left.

I would honestly figure being undecided would hurt your application as a second bachelors student. Most second bac students have a very exact plan with what they are hoping to accomplish. And because of this schools will commonly do a contract degree offer, where you take x,y, and z courses and then you get the degree. Skipping a lot of fluff because you already have a degree. Being undecided would seem to imply you just want to go hang out in college for no real good reason.
