Is a 225 on Step I high enough to land a spot at a residency program in Texas? I was hoping to hear if people with similar scores had any trouble getting a spot. Thanks for the help. I have read the previous posts, but I could not find any dealing specifically with Texas.

😀 😛

just kidding.. I'm just amazingly homesick!

I think like all things you are goign to find that it is not only your USMLE scores that will factor in. Your letters of rec will be very helpful (especially as the world of EM in texas is VERY small). Also, your personal statement can REALLY make a difference.

Remember also that UTHSCSA will be opening up two new spots for civilians, so basically you will be entering an established residency (military) but a new program....

Feel free to PM me if you want some more info...

I liked the guys I met from the military programs. Good bunch of guys and the program directors were cool as well. I met a bunch of them at the annual TCEP conferences.

Every year, TCEP has a "Jeopardy" style trivia contest for the residents at the annual meeting, which is a blast. Extremely laid back. One team came dressed in togas one year. There's a fair amount of popcorn throwing, bad puns, and clowning around. The last year I did it, one faculty playfully grabbed the faculty of another program and gave him a noogie. Most of us drank soft drinks, but one team decided BYOB was the order of the day.

Does anyone know if a 225 is a competitive Step I score to get a spot in a non-military residency program in Texas?

Should be fairly competitive. It's been a few (or more than a few actually) years since I was in that position, so the situation may have changed.

Erm, did you see the above post? Its a good score. But if you are bottom of your class or have crappy letters, it might not be.

Its not just your score.

Isn't it funny how most everyone I know from Texas, regardless of where we've all gone, gets crazy homesick for the place every now and then?

Not at all homesick here. If they moved Austin to the California coastline, I'd move there though. As it is, I'm pretty happy in the SoCal beach towns.

Not a problem for me.

Undergrad? Fightin' Texas Aggie Class of 1990 (WHOOP!)
Grad? Who knows? NYMC...anyone know? Not me.
Med school? UTMB

I'm an Aggie all the way.

Gig 'em.

Take care,
Jeff

Fortunately, my Aggie reality distortion field is alive and well. I'll just suppress vision of all things burnt orange. 😀

Take care,
Jeff
