Did any of you do specific USMLE step one prep courses?

Our school is running an extra course for people who want to sit it (i'm in an irish school)

It costs the euro equivalent of circa $1500.

''the form of a ‘Step 1 USMLE Preparation Program', which is being provided in association with Kaplan. The school has purchased a wide range of relevant Kaplan course materials and these will be made available to those International Students registered in the Program. The school will also provide weekly tutorials, ancillary workshops and simulated examinations based around the Kaplan material.''

I already have all the kaplan step one videos anyway, but am just wondering what would the major benefit of doing this additional course.

Do many of you do specific prep courses or just work off material/sources that you've already obtained via the internet??

or am i better off just studying and working away in my own time with the videos i already have?!

i should mention that our school curriculum itself is not taught towards the boards, hence why they are running additional classes.

Advice 😕

Sounds like you're at RCSI, where they gear more for the USMLE than the other Irish schools. Personally I think it depends on you and what you think you'll get out of it. Kaplan is decent as far as I can tell, and $1500 is a small drop in the bucket compared to the 100$K or so you're probably paying per year. That said, do you do better with hand holding or no? Does having scheduled lectures/review sessions force you to go over the material or are you self motivated? If you won't study unless you have scheduled sessions then the $1500 is definitely worth it.

Personally I am not the biggest fan of Kaplan as they tend to cover extra details that I don't need and it is money that I feel I could better spend elsewhere. I like cherry picking my review books for the individual subjects and I am self-motivated so I don't need the sessions to guide me. I understand your worry. The only thing I'd say is pick up a pharm book and the HY Behavioral Science book to beef up on the areas the Irish schools are weak in if you decide not to do the Kaplan course.
