Hello everyone! it's me (again)....

Is it true that after a certain number of years your record for USMLE steps is deleted from the ERAS/ECFMG records and program directors don't see it when you apply to residencies?

If so, after how many years are records deleted?

I am an IMG who graduated in 2000 and have 1 failed attempt in USMLE Step 1 in 2002. I've been told that after a certain number of years the record is wiped off. However, when I sign in to ERAS/ECFMG website using my old ECFMG number that was used when I attempted step 1 it shows the 1 failed attempt (no score, which was 71). Should I apply for/get a new ERAS/ECFMG number or will they always cross reference my name, records etc?

Thanks.

your failed attempts are not deleted

if you pass a step you have 7 years to pass the rest of the steps if not they are gone from your record and you have to take again thoose you had pass

example if you had pass the step 1 on 2002 you would have until 2009 to pass the rest of your steps. if you only pass step 1 on 2002 and never took the rest of step now on 2013 you would would have to take step 1 again

hope this helps

Thanks iansarria for replying and for the link. Yes, it is clearer now. It doesn't say anything about failed attempts record though

If I were you I wouldn't worry so much as to the fact that you failed step 1 before..... but rather focus that energy on doing well this time around.

The country has a shortage of internal medicine/family physicians... if you pass step 1 well enough, they'll over look a poor step1 that you took over a decade ago... and if you do exceedingly well on this exams, other specialties would be open to you applying.

So I'll say, forget the past and don't let it haunt you. It's up to you to decide your future.

Dedicate time to studying the material, memorize First Aid, complete uworld... and you should be fine.

Good luck
