I'm an Osteopathic MS3, and was originally going to take USMLE, but was talked out of it for several reasons. Well, the time has come to start thinking about residencies, and I am starting to regret not taking it. I heard through the grapevine though that you are able to take Step 2 USMLE, even if you haven't taken Step 1, and that for many programs that would be enough, esp if you get your scores before you apply. Is this true?

you can take step 2 without taking step 1.

however, your problem will be the residency part. almost all, if not all, US residencies require step 1.

check out the websites that you would like to go to residency at. it will list their requirements.

I am just taking Step 2 myself...I know people who have done it and got into rads/gas, etc at top allopathic residencies

There certainly are programs that REQUIRE DO's to take USMLE step 1 (Houston, San Antonio, Dallas) & some even require step 2 (San Antonio)

While taking step 2 before step 1 is not a problem, you may not gain anything out of it.

Research your top 5 choices & decide accordingly.

/* First, my soapbox.

A major problem with all subjective/opinion-based forums like studentdoctor.net is that there is so much HERESAY posted, if you actually follows the advice of those who (freely) offer it, you can potentially RUIN major opportunities for personal and professional growth. It is often difficult to parse fact from fiction here, and the noise to signal ratio of mind chatter is high.

Talk is cheap, so here's my 2 cents: Do NOT under any circumstances take advice posted here as truth; trust your own instincts and do your own research from official sources.

The simple FACTS are:

1. You can take register and take USMLE Step2 before Step1, and
2. MANY US allopathic Residencies will offer interviews and ACCEPT you, without Step1 OR Step2, because they accept COMLEX as well.

My OPINION is that taking USMLE Step2, even without Step1 can only help you if you do well. (and vice-versa).

Please search the archives...I've asked the same question, and got the same lame-brained responses from people with no clue.

Take it easy,

Hence me suggesting that the person research his/her top 5 choices.
Everyone that responded so far seemed to be in favour of the OP taking Step 2 w/o Step 1.
Also, advising someone on an internet forum to NOT trust advice on an internet forum ?? 🙂
